I just gotta 440 with a Perkins. and when I am going top speed I can't turn either direction (not even a little), It just makes a bad grinding noise. Its hard to tell where its coming from. There are no other driving/ steering problems. The second problem is it is leaking a lot of hydraulic fluid after some use. It is coming from underneath. I looks like it may be coming from a clear tube. Could it be some kind of overflow? Lastly, where can a guy find information on these old things? I am also looking for manuals...

I removed the skid plate and saw that the seller screwed me. There is a major leak and he hooked up a funnel under it and plumbed the funnel to the hydro return! I piece of snow fell in the funnel and plugged it. hydro fluid was spilling everywhere. It is leaking where the left side control enters the hydro pump/ actuator box. Sorry for the incorrect terms I haven't got a manual yet and I am new to hydraulics. But there is not a drop of fluid until it warms-up, then it pours out. I want to post pics, but I just read the directions~?~?~?~?~? I can email them ma.hastings at live. C 0 MM

That sure is a nasty way of patching it up... What about all the crud it will get in the system????
If you look up my profile and email me, or give me links to the images if you host them on say photobucket i can put them up for you.

Is that for steering at all? Hopefully its a simple fix, a new O ring or seal?

Thanks, It is the valve for the left side to go farward or reverse. I hope it is a seal that can be replaced without taking apart the whole unit? It seems odd that it doesn't drip a drop untill I have driven it for 10-15 minutes then it gushes. I don't know how long the funnel "fix" was there so I probably should change the fluid:(

I have never worked on one before, i would have assumed there was a way to replace the seal without tearing it down, but i can't really see it.
I too would change the oil, there will be water in it.
