New Guy with bobcat 742. machine wont move anymore :(

Help Support SkidSteer Forum:

My 742 has made that loud whining noise for the 22-years I've owned it. Just turning or partial forward on the sticks. Full forward on both sticks and it is quiet. No leaks, foam or power loss.....just noise. Mine is the later model w/o the suction filter, just the full flow canister.
Mine gets to the point to where it doesn't want to turn at all with a lot of noise and you can definately tell a big loss in power. But when you first start it, it runs and works great for about 5 or 10 minutes then starts acting up. Any more ideals. Thanks.

What is the machine serial number? If it's 14999 or lower it has the bronze filter.

My serial number is 15435.
It's possibly time to pull the pump out and check it for wear. If the wear plates are marked, you can flatten thism with glass and wet and dry sand paper. It can really bring them back to life when you would normally have to buy new plates.
If you decide to go that way, it does take some work, but at the very least, you should get more power from your machine afterwards.

I ordered a service and parts manual on CD the other day and was looking for the wear plates that you were talking about. It looks like there are two of them in the mid section of the hydrostatic pump. It looks like everything needs to come apart to get to them. Is there a simple way to get to them or should I rebuild the whole pump? Thanks for your input.

Those are the plates.
Sadly, no easy way to get to them. You need to pull the engine then the pump.
There really isn't much that wears in the pump. When it's apart, keep both sections together, don't mix parts up. Check the parts for wear and go from there.
Hopefully its just worn wear plates, others have had great success with flattening the plates with glass and wet and dry sand paper.

Wow! You have to pull the motor to get to the pump? You can't just take the pump out in sections from the top? I may have bitten off more than I can chew! Thanks Tazza.

You can get the pump out without pulling the motor, but you will have a hard time getting it back in.
Removing the engine is not as hard as you may think. Remove wires, radiator hoses, throttle linkages, exhaust, fuel lines. 4 engine mounting bolts and it simply slides back and out.

I will check the hydrostatic motors first, most of the time just need to repack, there are some internal seal (white seals) that got flatten, and the sintom is lack of power, are very easy to take out, the hard part is they have to be timing. I'm apologyse for mi english. Best regards.

If you do attack the drive motors, they need to be timed as dr.bobcat said. This isn't as hard as it may seem though.

On the left side, where the 3 hoses enter the block. Remove the middle hose and the fitting from the block. Behind here is a spring and a bronze filter. Not many people know about it, so its hardly ever changed. This is your suction line filter, it will cause the exact problems you are talking about.
Remove the filter and you can clean it with kerosene or de-greaser but they really aren't expensive to buy new.
Clean or replace that filter and let me know how you go. I had this exact same problem on my 731, it refused to turn or drive up hills when warm. Cleaned the filter and it FLEW up the hill and did dough nuts in the dirt with ease.
If you have any questions just let me know. I have probably been there... done that!
I have the 743 with the single suction line 15001 and above s/n i am having an issue with the right side not moving forward or backwards. what i have tried so far is swapped drive motors. the problem stayed on right side. then i swapped both the springs and replenishing/relief valves one at a time and the problem stayed on the right side for both sets. i did check the top plug on the side with the steering linkage it looked fine but was not able to swap with any thing else i am not sure what that valve does. but i am out of ideas now and any help would be great please email [email protected] or call 707-290-1246 or reply to this thanks caleb

Afraid it might be your pump

Afraid it might be your pump
that is what i was afraid of i have it jacked up in the air and all tires move in both directions but the right side is slower than the left i was wondering if it may be the wear plates in the pump that controls the right side drive does any one know what section controls the drive motor for the right side is it the back or middle section of the main pump assembly and does any one have a component repair book for it it is a vickers unit don't know if that helps at all thanks caleb
