Can the shock be changed on this assembly. The shock is leaking and I would like to change it. The assembly seems to be working ok. The shock number shows that it is a Volkswagen steering shock which I can get at auto parts store. I can buy the assembly but don't want to spend $225 to get it. Just put new tires on and don't have the money right now. Thank you.

It has been a while since I did it, but I think the following is right. Remove the front 1/2" nut from the stud and remove the front portion of the tube. There is a retaining ring on the end of the barrel of the shock. Behind the retaining ring is a guide bushing. Open a vice far enough to catch the guide bushing while allowing you to push the shock and retaining ring forward to remove the retaining ring. The shock can now be removed.

Thank you Mike10. I will look at the VW shock and make sure it has the same design. Right now we have gotten so much rain that the ground is just mud. My rain gauge has to be emptied every 2-3 days. 16" since first of June. Have to fix outside so I can get the boom up. Then dodge the rain showers. Again thank you.

deaop06, You don't happen to remember the Volkswagen shock number, do you? Thanks - Dwain

Not sure if you have already found your answer, but I'm pretty sure you have the same ones I just replaced on my L454. The damper is the steering damper off a 1971-74 Super Beetle. The Gabriel PN is 14005. I just bought 2 off Amazon. The trick with them is the retainer ring grooves on the narrow part of the housing, one near the top and one near the bottom. The VW damper generally does not have them and you may have to have machined. The two I rec'd did not have them, but did have a couple larger groves at one end and I was able to use a couple of pieces of 1" copper tubing spacers and a larger retaining clip on the end to successful re-assemble. -Stef

I purchase one for my l555 online just measure and make sure it's the same length and that your ends will match up and you will be in business . I paid $25 for two that was 2 years ago. And still working just fine. 🙏😊
