Mercedes diesel swap into a 722

I recently found out that the Wisconsin 4 cylinder that came w/ my 722 is going to cost an arm and a leg to rebuild. I do have a lead on a Mercedes diesel engine that was on a reefer trailer. Has anyone ever swapped a Mercedes diesel into these machines?

I have never heard of one being done on this forum, but if the height and HP ratings are close, i see no reason why not.
Is it air or water cooled? if air, you will have fewer issues, water cooled, you'll need a radiator.

I haven't measured it yet, but from what little research I've done it's a 38-43hp. A little more powerful than the factory Ford inline 4 cylinder which was rated around 30hp. The Mercedes is also water cooled like the factory engine in the 722s were.

IF you do this, please post the details. That little Ford engine is a good one, but it is becoming an orphan for parts. I may repower my 742 some day.

Mercedes Benz produce some of the best engines. If you do well with coupling the lift with the pump, I think you get a pretty good machine. Good luck.
