I bought a NH Lx665 Turbo skid steer yesterday and I haven't got the manuals yet. I have been researching fluid specs on line and it appears that the manual says both the engine and hydraulic system use 10W30 motor oil. This machine has been running for years with 15W40 Rotella in the engine and all-purpose tractor hydraulic/transmission fluid in the hyd. system. I have tractors that run these same fluids so using them would be convenient. This is my first skid steer. My thinking always goes to listen to the manual but my research seems to show more owners using what is in this machine than the 10W30. Logic says if it has run this long with these fluids it should be fine, but I don't want to screw around with damaging something this expensive, so I'll ask the experts. What do you guys think? Also, is there a place I can go on line to find out what year this machine is by entering the serial number? Thanks.

I've been using rotella brand 10w30 in both engine and hydro. Hydro never gets over 120 degrees and it runs fine. Only thing I ever deviated from in the manual is chain case fluid, I used 80w90 gear instead of 15w40 motor oil. Machine works flawlessly at 1800 hrs so far. Little whining from right side pump but I hear cleaning standpipe screen should help.

I have had the 5-40 rotella synthetic in the engine now about 3 years and really like it especially in the winter. Only change it once a year though and never had to start it below -20f but it does start quick. I don't think there is a standpipe on that model though.

I emailed a New Holland dealer and also got information from the mechanic that previously serviced this unit. The dealer said "Now they are saying you can use NH 134 hyd oil in the winter time. So I guess it doesn't much matter." He didn't say anything about the engine oil. The mechanic for the company I bought it from said they run the Rotella 15W40 and all-purpose hyd oil because that's what they run in everything else. He said if he had run 10W30 the operators would have definitely replenished the hyd fluid reservoir with hyd fluid and caused issues. He said running these fluids is common and they've never had an issue. We have a lot more hot weather than really cold weather here, so the heavier oil is probably a good thing. Now that we know NH says NH134 is good in the hyd system I don't see a reason to change from what is in it. If anyone wants to weigh in I'm open minded.

By the way you can get the service manuals in pdf form free here. cost a few hundred in paper at the dealer though. If you can't find the link skidsteerca. is the one who posted the link so look through his past posts. It will say ls160 but is the same books.

Thanks Jerry. I looked on line previously but couldn't find a pdf for my specific machine. I have a week of skid steer ownership, so I need to ask, when you say the ls160 is the same books, can I assume everything in it is accurate for my 665, or is it most everything? I believe this is the manual you mention. http://www.mediafire.com/?ov9zqt7xwtl Thanks

Yes, I think that is the one, It will have separate electrical , transmission and engine sections in it. The only difference I know of between the 160 and the 665 is the gear reduction case on the 665 is lubed with 80-90 and the filler is under the seat on both sides. The 160 uses chain case oil for the same gear case. Also the 160 is naturally aspirated and the 665 is turbo, I think a 170 is just a 160 with a turbo. That is a really good book to have saved on a flash drive . Worth several hundred bucks in paper copy. There may be other differences in models , if you find some out let me know.

The equipment mechanic at my son's work made a very good point about the choice of either oil or hydraulic fluid in the NH skids steers that can use either. He said oil is likely a convenience option but keep this in mind. Although the Lx665 may be able to use 10W30 motor oil in the hydraulic system, it is unlikely that any implements that use a wet line will be compatible with motor oil. I never considered that. A very valid point I think.
