while waiting for parts i was going over my machine and pulled the dipsticks on the final drive gearbox's down by the pedals. right side was good but left was overfull almost all the way up the stick and mikly! i drained the chaincase and that was milky also. do i have to suck it out the dip stick tube or is there a plug i'm missing?

Looking at the diagram on the new holland site it looks like a drain plug on the rear of the gear case.

there is a drain under the skid for the chaincase. do i have to remove panels, covers to get to the drain to speak of jerry? the backside of the gearbox is under the hand controls and looks real crowded down/back there! any way you could send me a picture? email is: [email protected] thanks

Sorry Jimmy , I was just going by the parts diagram on the New Holland site, go there and it's under skidsteer and about 75 diagrams into the manual.

even by looking at that i cant figure out where it is. maybe i need to remove the wheel on that side and its inder there behind all the dirt? it cant be under the seat within all those controls because there is no place for it to drain. i need to bite the bullett and buy a service manual!

On my 665 there is a cover between the wheels on the outside and the drain is behind that cover. I think the manual is about 30 bucks at tradebit, save it to removable drive or disc and you will always have it.

The easiest way to drain the gearbox is to remove the steering pods. After you remove the center panel, between your legs, there are five bolts that bolt each pod to the frame. You will also remove the two bolts attaching the steering levers to the center neutralizer assy. There is also a rod going from the steering lever to a pivot point above the gearbox. Remove the bolt from the linkage rod at the pivot. Now the pods can be removed from the loader.
At the bottom of the dipstic tube is a tube nut that attaches it to the gearbox. remove this nut and the dipstick tube can be moved away from the gearbox.
While the left steering pod is removed you can easily adjust the parking brake on that side.

I could not find one either, Jen-sales sounds like they have one but no price. If you have a good dealer will he copy out a few pages for you? The one for my lx665 was several hundred dollars from the dealer and about 700 pages. I was able to get it electronically though. I think that dealer would have let me look in his book but too far away to be practical. I have never checked with the library, wonder if they have access to such things.

Best way is to raise the front of the machine enough to get underneath it. Pull off the skid plate under the motors. the pipe plugs will be just inside the edges of the hole. The gearboxes are the same for each side, meaning that on one side the plug will be in front and on the other side, the plug will be in the back. That is much easier to do than pulling the pods. IMO Adrian

Welcome aboard jd. As they say, there is more than one way to Dublin. If the machine is an early 865 the skid plate is not large enough to get to the drain plugs easily. Plus most machines need their parking brakes adjusted and this seems like a good time to do it. If you have read some of my replies to posts you will notice I stress safety and maintaining the safety equipment.
What part of the country are you from? I have worked on NH for 40 yrs but I like this site because you can always pick up new tips and see problems that I have not yet encountered. I look forward to your future posts and am sure I will learn some new tips.

Mike, I agree it's not easy to get to the plugs. But it is possible. And you're right, every LX800/900 and LS180/190 usually needs the brakes adjusted. Boy do I like the new SAHR brakes. No more adjusting! Except on LS and L 150, 160, 170, 175. Those SAHR brakes can still go out of adjustment. I'm from Northern Illinois in the west suburbs of Chicago. The dealership I work for is near South Elgin, IL. Adrian
