I ran across a bobcat 811 backhoe that is in fair condition. The price isn't too bad, about $1900. Am I safe to assume this would fit my 2006 JD 317 skid steer? Any recommendations on buying a used backhoe on what to look for or other backhoe brands? Do they operate ok?

It should fit, you just may need to make up some adaptors to secure it to the frame of your machine. It may take a bit of work, but it should work, as long as your machine is rated to lift the weight of the backhoe attachment.

I have a JD 10 backhoe. I can get you some pics later this week of the breast plate bracket on the 317.
I have the manual for the hoe as well, so I can get you part numbers too.
Will be end of the week as I am on the road now.

Terrific, I appreciate it very much.

One more question on this, before I make a final decision on buying. The bobcat 811 backhoe says its righ at 2000 lbs. My JD 317 has an operating weight capacity of 1750 w/o the counterweights and 2100 with the counterweights. I don't have the counterweights, but I won't be lifting this more then a foot off the ground so can I get away with it? Is there a diffeence between operating weight moving dirt/rocks, lifting the bucket up high - versus the weight capacity of a backhoe attachment?

I think you will be fine. They state operating weight at 1750, that should mean it will tip at about twice that.
The thing to remember with a hoe atachment is when you move, curl it in as to keep the weight as close to the machine as possible to prevent it possibly tipping forward. You have stabilizer legs for the front to take the load when digging, so don't worry about that.
As long as your machine is capable of lifting the attachment, it will be fine. When it is attached, it will do the rest of the work.

Hey sorry I had forgot all about this til the other day when I was hooking the hoe up for a quick project.
I snapped some photos of the hoe coupling to the breast plate on the machine. I hope this is helpful
I am on the road again so let me know if you want the part numbers for the bracket and breast plate.

Not a bad way to do it. Shame Bobcat machines have part of the lift arms there, would make it simple.
Thanks for the images, you learn something new every day.

If you are still looking for a backhoe check out the CAT BH W30 or something like that. You can operate the controls of the hoe from your operators seat. No need to get out and then hop into the front chair. I love mine, I picked it up for $3300 and it's WELL worth it!

Can you see down into the trench very deep when seated in the machine.
My seat is high enough to see the bottom 10 feet down.
