Hey all, I am going to be bidding on a large demo job, there is a large amount of shrubs and grass. what would be good for that kind of tear out, i was thinking of a root grapple, but how well would it work on sod? i have the concrete demo part under controll as thats most of my work. also there is going to be some small amount of grading and some small boulders to get rid of. The job is to get a complete landscape makeover, the contractor that wants to hire me said "I want to see nothing but dirt when your done" so this is the largest green removal job for me ( i have done plenty of concrete/ asphault demo jobs) so any info would be of great help, Thanks Jesse

A good root grapple is just the ticket to get rid or the unwanted debris, and it will tear up the sod but will leave alot of it behind. However I would think that just your bucket would be fine to pick up the sod after loosening it with the root rake. Or a good solid bottom grapple bucket like this http://www.skidsteer.ca/7industrialgrapplebucket.pdf to peel and tear the sod off.
Many landscape contractors will stockpile the sod at their yard and let it rot down for a year or two as this is where all the top soil is. Eventually you will have so free top soil for the unwanted garbage.
Of course tilling or power raking after the sod removal will help level and clean up the site.
Add some new top soil and seed or re sod and presto...

I am a landscaper and I use pallet forks with one of the forks removed to get out old shrubs. I just poke under the roots and then pop them out. As far as removing sod...I just disk it up and don't remove anything. Of course I apply glyphosphate (41%) to the grass about 2 weeks prior to disking. This is the fastest method I have found.
