Wont start without either. The story goes.... started fine and then the starter went out. Yep, with the hood and booms in the way. Any ways.... now it wont start without either. I ran it until the radiator cap was hot, let it sit 20 mins and nothing just cranks the heck out of that rebuilt starter. Give it a snort and it fires right up.

Update... I do have power to the glow plugs.
Pull the glowplugs and make sure they get hot. Is the machine spinning over fast? I had an old perkins l785 that was was hard to start because someone had installed small gauge battery cables. New heavy cables and it spun better and starts right up. When you crank it without ether does it smoke out the exhaust?

Looking for smoke while cranking is good advise.
If it puffs white smoke it's not getting hot enough to burn, as you said you are not getting power to the glow plugs i'd suspect a relay is bad.
You can cheat, get a jumper cable and run power from the battery to the plugs for say 20 seconds then get a helper crank the engine and see if it starts.
You can start the engine with the plugs still glowing, just don't leave them running or they will burn out..

After moving snow for about an hour it would not restart itself without either. The glow plugs shouldn't be a factor at that point. But I did state that they DO have power. I'm wondering if this is a fuel or compression issue. The dang thing runs like a top once it's running but getting there is always a project.

I always thought that it was weird that the manual calls for glow plugs EVERY time the engine is started. My experience has been that glow plugs are for a cold engine. But the manual surprised me.

Don't use either bad for it try wd40 if you need somethig

I would pull the glow plugs and put power to them and see if they glow at least a 1/4" and all the way to the tip they can have power and still not work right
It could be low on compression causing issues, i had a machine that really wanted a glow every start, even just a short one. The engine could be warm and shut off for say 10 minutes, it still wanted a glow for easy starting.
A good engine, as you know, should only need glowing when stone cold, after that it should start without glowng.

Plan on tackling the glow plug test tomorrow. Been plowing for the township a lot lately. 1st I need my finger shrinking pills to take affect.

Update. Every single glow plug is dead as a doornail. I would've thought that they would go gradually or one at a time. Went to Napa and they are out of them. Go figure, it's been really cold lately. They offered a hotter glow plug but I'm always nervous to experiment. It does interest me though.

Do you have a carquest in your area. They usually have them and are cheaper than Napa

Yeah, they were the ones that 1st came up with the hotter plugs but wait time was longer and price was the same. I went to every parts store in town hoping to find them sitting on a dusty shelf. No luck and went back to Napa. I think the machine has recently hit the age where parts are not being stocked any more. I tell them that the v1902 is very common engine but the parts boys don't decide whats on those shelves.

How did you get your fingers shrunk down? That's a trick I really need to learn.

Mother nature handled that part. My shop was about 40 degrees. It also helps numb them from being smashed etc..
If you use the hotter glow plug don't glow them too long. My 665 has the hotter ones and maximum glow is 15 seconds. I think I saw in the book it mentioned that longer glow will shorten their life. Thought I saw them on a site in the UK cheaper when I was looking for one.
