I just bought a 2008 L170 and the engine was quiet but then I noticed oil seepage near the front bolt (nut?) on the front of the valve cover. Once I snugged it hand tight, it stops leaking but the engine started to miss, smoke and knock until I loosened it back up. (just the one front bolt) Could those 4 bolts be for rocker arm clearance & require a particular torque for clearance? Any idea what it may be? Or may the gasket just be worn. Skid steer only has 1700 hours. thanks

Valve cover bolts are 9 - 12 ft/lbs I would remove the cover and check if everything is in place and install a new sealing ring.

Thanks. I am picking up a new gasket today. Before I install I would like to set the rocker arms - valve clearance, etc. Would you know those specs? I am familiar with gas engines & I don't have the service manual for this skid steer so your help is great!

Tightening of the rocker cover nuts should not cause the engine to miss. While you have the cover off make sure everything else is tight and in order. If something else is loose that may have lead to the cover bolts leaking oil. The studs that hold the rocker shaft may be loose or the nuts that hold it down may be loose. It will be easy to check these while the cover is off.

Got the top O ring (gasket) but I will order the other gaskets before I open it up & replace them all at once. I will set all the clearances & be sure everything else is good before buttoning it up. Is the valve clearance the same - .008 - for both intake & exhaust?

.008 for both intake and exhaust

Forgot to ask - what is the torque on the cylinder head bolts & rocker arms?
65-69 ft/lb oiled for the head bolts; rocker arm nuts 20-29 ft/lb; head cover nuts 9-12 ft/lb when you torque the head start with one of the bolts in the center and spiral out.
