We have what we think is a 1998 New Holland LX865 skidsteer. I can't find the dipstick for the chain case. How do i check he oil in the LX 865 chain case. How would I add oil? Also I am getting conflicting info on what type oil to put in the chain case. Thanks DPForumDog Granny DP tag: chaincase chainbox chain box dip stick

If its anything like my JD7775 which I believe it is.........there are two areas to check oil. One would be between the drive wheels of the machine on the outside. You will see a plug with 1/2" drive recessed hole. Loosen the plug with a ratchet and remove. Stick your finger in the hole and you should be able to touch oil. If not, add oil through this hole until it comes out. This is your "final drive" and uses 10w-30. There is one plug on each side of machine. Next, lift the seat and look at the outer walls of the frame. On each side there should be a gear box with the same type 1/2" drive plug. These gear boxes take 80 or 90 weight. No dipsticks that I know of other than engine oil and everything I said may be different if your machine is a two speed.

The early LX865 and 885 had separate chain case and gearbox reservoirs. In those machines the gearbox would use 80w90 oil and the chain case would use 10w30. In the later machines the two reservoirs were combined and only 80w90 oil was used. In all cases the chain case oil level and fill plug is the plug in the side of the chain case between the two wheels, but closer to the front wheel. To tell how yours is setup, look into the operators compartment from the front of the loader. Look in the area where you heels of your feet would be when sitting in the seat. If you see a cap or plug sticking out of the corner then you have separate reservoirs. That plug contains a dipstick. Another way to locate the plug if present. look at the control lever which goes through the plate. The plate continues down to where your feet are located when in the loader. In the corner where the plate makes a 90 degree bend will be the plug if present.
