My 1845c and similar are notorious for allowing water to get in the chain cases. Here is what to do.Remove the plastic cover and rubber gasket. Clean all the dirt and rust off of the steel sealing area .Now coat the steel sealing area with lots of anti seize or heavy grease, rub ,it in good,This is to preven the rubber gasket from ever sticking again .Now clean the plasic cover and rubber gasket in a water based cleaner such as purple power from walmart, the gasket will come right off it is held on with some cheezy double sided tape . Clean both parts again and again to remove all grease. Let dry in warm place for a day or two.Now remove the rusted carraidge bolts from the plastic cover and throw them and the steel wing nuts in the trash can where the belong.Replace them with 4 -2 inch long yes 2 inch long 3/8 STAINLESS STEEL carriadge bolts and STAINLESS STEEL wing nuts and 8 yes 8 3/8 STAINLESS STEEL washers from lowes or home depot.Allmost done, get permatex number 1 fast drying hard setting gasket sealant from autozone.Rub it in to the plastic cover and ONE side of the rubber gasket. Now press rubber gasket on to the plastic cover firmly and let it sit over night in a warm place. The rubber gasket is now pemanetly glued on to the plastic cover and will never come off.Now rub inagood coat of anti seize or heavy grease on the other side of the rubber gasket and install using 2 washers per cover. Now 2 years from now when you are checking your chains,The ss wingnuts will spin rite off and the rubber gasket wont glue it self onto the steel chaincase.
