Determining model?

I just picked up a used bobcat. Thinking its a 444 or ? Has a 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine. Newer bucket so that's no help. The plate is gone, but there is a stamp where the plate should be that reads 477. Was there such a model? Was there a model with that power plant? Anyone got a good cheap source for manuals? Best source for parts? Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

For the maual.......you can type in what you think it is on the internet and see pic and look at bobcat spec if you can post some pics someone can tell you

If the Wisconsin motor is original, then it would either be a 600 (VF4D engine) or a 610 (VH4D engine)
or at least that is my understanding. I'm still trying to work this all out myself.
There are others on here that know these machines very well. I'm sure they will chime in when they get a chance.

I'm not sure how old the machine is you're dealing with but on any one that I've had the serial number was stamped in lower part of the mainframe somewhere on the machine. If you find it you might be able to call your dealer and find out the model and what parts/service manual.

I haven't been able to locate any serial numbers on the frame. If anyone can tell me exactly where to look I might be able to scrape off enough paint and crud to find it. I have come to the conclusion that the engine is not the original. I can't find anything anywhere that mentions a model with a 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine. The 600s had a Wisconsin, but by everything I have found so far, they are all 4 Cylinder. I even called local dealer and talked with the parts guy, and he said its likely not original. With all that stated I am going to assume that mine is a Melroe 444 (M444) and go from there till something comes up that proves me wrong. Since the engine isn't original, its likely that anything not directly engine related is interchangeable anyway, so I should be ok. Now I just gotta get her to quit leaking all over the place and I might be able to use her! Anyone done the rear axle seals on an M444?

The serial number is never put in the same place on the frame. It can be on the front or either side. I'm not sure when they started putting it there. Sorry I can't be more help.

Just to be clear- this is a non-hydrostat (i.e. belt driven sheave and shaft) model and you are sure it is a Melroe/Bobcat brand machine?
If so as others have mentioned the M600 and M610 generally used a 4 cylinder Wisconsin. There was a M371 that used a small, 14 HP motor but not sure what brand.The next earlier small model, the M500, used a 2 cylinder Koheler engine (the K662). If not a M371 it is possible that someone swapped a 2 cylinder Wisconsin in for the 2 cylinder Koehler in a M500 but not sure how much they differ to know whether possible to bolt right in or not.

I forgot to mention that the M444 you stated also was an early model, just before the M500 and did have a 2 cylinder motor but was originally an Onan brand engine.

One more thing- the serial number plate on these early Melroe bobcats (at least on the M500, M600, and M610 that I own or have seen) was in the center of the vertical kickplate/seat base between your legs when sitting in the machine. Sometimes they are covered over by paint or crud.

The rivets are there, I can tell where it should be, but the plate is gone. I was hoping someone would say something like 'the serial number is also stamped into the frame on the right rear corner' or something like that. But no luck so far.

I am new to this forum but did you ever come up with the model bobcat that you have ? I believe that I have the same machine as you.
