Case 1840 won't move with engine running, chains are good, no leaks

I have an early 90's 1840 the skidloader won't move. I was driving it straight and it just stopped without any warning, a whining noise is heard but nothing major. Looking for an online repair manual or something that can help me out here or any info you might have on the real problem. The boom and bucket lift properly and the machine is running just fine, the chain drive is fine and there are no leaks anywhere. How do I check the connection between the engine and the hydraulics, will this help? Looking for info, the case dealer in shakopee minnesota told me the repair was 3100.00 but he said it could be a hydraulic pump or just broken bolts. I was not willing to spend 3100 on a problem of unknown scope. Let me know if anything sounds familiar to you or you can help. Thanks, Brent [email protected]

Its not as simple as your park brake is on? Not sure if yours has an electric brake or not but if it does it could be that the coil has burnt out and the brake is on preventing you from moving.

Wow 3100.00 without even seeing it. Wish I had a crystal ball like that. That should be enough to cover all the minor things that could go wrong. Or maybe they just change all the pumps and hydros without looking into what went south.
Since the boom and bucket operate fine its not the conection between the motor and the pumps or you would have nothing. It could be a stripped spline withing the 3 sections of the pump (one section for each side/ r and l wheels and the 3rd for the pump for lift and tilt. Though on most loaders this tripple pump appears as one unit.
First off does the engine struggle when you push the steering levers ahead or does it sound just like it does when its in neutral. If the engine does not sound like its being loaded my first thought would be you lost your charge pressure. You don't have any red warning lights that are not normally on illuminated in the cab? You may need to pick up a 250 or 500 psi guage and find where the charge pressure is monitored from.
Can you take some pictures of the pump area and we should be able to locate the charge pressure port for you.

The hydraulic pump that runs the loader fuctions is driven off of the crankshaft at the rear of the machine under the radiator. Your problem is the coupler at the flywheel end of the engine that drive the travel pumps. You will find the coupler, mounting bolts or the slpines on the coupler or shaft damaged and not turning the pump shaft. Pull your travel pumps and the cover on the flywheel housing and see what let loose.

Hello and thanks in advance for help with almost identical problem with a small difference. I have parked the 1994 Case 1840 after working with it for a few hours with absolutely no problem and the next morning the engine started as usual, the lift and tilt worked perfectly but no left of right back or forward drive. I started looking in this forum and found this very similar occurrence. I read the replies and went back to the loader, removed the seat, took photos of the tandem pump. I also opened the back swing door with the transmission cooler and took pictures of the small pump there. There are no leaks nowhere and also none of the instrument panel lights indicates any problem. They all go off after the engine starts running. I looked at the tandem pump and it looks that both the first and last stage are for the left and right drive while the center stage is for the lift and tilt. If a spline were split inside I would assume all stages after the breakage would stop delivering pressure so I am confused as to how the first and last stage would not work and the center stage in between would work properly. The engine sound doesn't change at all if the I try to go left or right or forward or backward as if the flow of oil was obstructed someplace (I am assuming the 1st and last stage of the tandem pump is OK for the reason that the center section is working fine). Also the next confusion comes from someone responding to the initial question (the last response) and says that the problem is caused by the small pump under the radiator. I am not sure what that small pump does, could you please clarify that? How do I attach photos to the message? Thank you for your help.

Host your files on a place like photobucket.
Open them in another window and right click/copy then go to your message right click/paste.
Its as easy as that.
I don't know how your pump is setup, some use the hydraulic pump to generate charge pressure, others use a seperate pump. If the drive pumps aren't getting charge pressure, the machine will not move.
