Does anyone have any thoughts on this machine? Interested but don't want to buy a machine that will quit shortly after I get it.

it is impossible for anyone online to tell you if its good or bad
5,000 hours is a bunch of hours, but more important is how were them hours put on, how much care was done to machine over the 5000 hours or not
how often grease, , Pm's done?
what was it used for?
what condition are the pins and bushings in?
and so on
these are some of the things you have so decipher when looking at any machine
if you do NOT know what to look for, take someone with you to go look at it that does,

next is, WHO will be doing repairs to this machine, YOU or a dealer or??
as that has to be factored in when you FIND issues, or plan to do Pm's and basic 's

as costs can go high REALLY fast when using a dealer to do things

new paint only hides things, IMO< so, buyer be ware has never been higher

take an experienced operator /tech with you to go see it
its worth PAYING someone to go if need be over just winging it on your own!

That is a TON of hours IMO. For comparison, that would approximate over 200,000 miles on most vehicles. I'd pass just on the hours.

Definitely find a good mechanic to look it over, preferably the guy you are going have working on it.

5,000 hours can be ready for the salvage yard or barely broke in. I have a 1985 Case that has over 14,000 hours on it.

Half joking rule of thumb I concocted. Use a skid steer as a loader and it will last X hours. Use it as an excavator and it will last 1/2X hours. Use it as a wrecking ball and it will last 1/10X hours.

You got some good advice, 5000 hrs is enough hrs to be very careful. You might be lucky and have a good machine, but more than likely it will nickel and dime you to death. I had tractor mechanic tell me once that 5000 hrs is the breaking point on equipment because that's when the repairs start. But I also understand why people would like to take a chance, because low hr equipment is expensive. I myself wouldn't touch it.

Depreciation isn't free either. My brother bought a Cat 226D new and traded it while it was still under warranty. Depreciation cost was $20/hr.

I just bought a case SR220 with about 4900 hours, had every service done by the local Case dealer since new, but had a brand new engine in it. It's an EGR engine so I would guess 5000 is probably median life depending on use.

Big difference in buying someone else's 5000 hours and putting your own hours on the machine too. Like you mentioned, no one will ever know what that machine went through.

New engine is a huge mitigation on those high hours. If the OP said this machine he is looking at had a new engine, then it would be easier to recommend the purchase.
