Bocat S185 - Motor carrier damaged

The motor carrier of my Bobcat S185 got damaged as shown in the link below. I will really appreciate information on possible cause of this damage, how to prevent it in the future and how to repair it.

For the splines to be sheared off like that, one would assume that one side of that would be locked up tight.
What do the shaft splines look like, and can you move either side by hand?

The only thing i can think of that could cause this is lack of oil, but that side has oil from the case drain from the motor on it, so it will alwaus be swimming in it.
This shaft presses out, hopefully a new shaft isn't stupidly expensive from the dealer, but how does the shaft on the motor look? as i assume it has also worn, so you'll need both.
