Well it started to do it gradually but yesterday I turned on the machine and it felt like it was misfiring with the throttle all the way down. I noticed a cloud of smoke, not from the tail pipe, but from a vent tube coming out of the engine. I took the valve cover cap off and noticed it too coming out of the valve cover. When the engine speed is raised, the machine stops misfiring but the smoke is still there. You think its time for an overhaul/engine replacement?

If it's out of the breather tube, that could be wear or a head gasket.
Is it using oil or coolant?

Excessive smoke out the breather would tell me the engine has a lot of blow by. Using oil also is a sign it needs a ring job and cylinders honed.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have to weight out my options and see what my next move will be.

A runner will run you about $1,500 off ebay, you will probably have to put more into the engine you have now. It does sound like the rings are quite worn, you really need a compression gauge to know for sure, but it's not looking great.
