I have a 753 with around 3000 hours on it. I recently bought it off of an friend of mine that I grew up working with when I was in high school and college. I learned pretty much everything on this machine and was happy to get the oppertunity to buy it for my property. He used it primarily for the aux hydraulics - drilling fence posts for his fence business. Honestly i i think i saw this machine with a bucket on it 5-10 times. Here are my issues - I was changing the fluids and noticed the two wires that go to the charge switch were unplugged - i think i got the right name its the sensor to the right of the hydraulic spin on filter in the back of the unit. When i plug the wires onto the sensor i get an error message that beeps and eventually shuts the machine down. Unplugged the machine runs fine like nothing is wrong. Tried pulling the sensor off and cleaning the small 10 micron filter behind it and reinstalling - same issue is present. I am not sure if this issue is related but i cannot start the machine without first keying on the ignition, hitting the aux buttons so both lights go green then firing it over. If i do not hit the aux buttons the machine will start then die right away.

A quick nose about in the book indicates that the HP-1 is a hydraulic fluid pressure warning, engine shutdown, and the -3 indicates a connector is unplugged.
What's odd is that you'd get the -3 with it plugged in, that's what you'd expect with it unplugged.
Given that it seems to work fine otherwise, I'd suspect a defective sender, but hopefully a techie will be along with a definitive answer.

I'm with flyerdan, i think it's a sender issue too. Sounds like it's an old BOSS style machine.
Wonder why you need to activate the aux hydraulics before starting, i can't think of what could be the reason, unless the sensor has something to do with it. The 3-5 second shut down timer is generally the computer looking at sensors and turning off if it feels something isn't right that could cause damage.

Yes this is all coming from the BOSS readout. I can actually read everything believe it or not. Must have got lucky ...is it common for these to burn out? Ran it today for about two hours after work to plow snow...ran like a dream with a ton of power. It will shut down it i plug the wires in to the charge sensor or charge switch in the back...there are two wires that are there however and when i plug both onto the sensor it starts to beep and shuts down after about 30 seconds. Of all things the part the bothers me the most is needing to hit the aux buttons twice before i even fire it over. i dont know if they are related? i am willing to replace the sensor if it is bad

A picture may help, if you can upload it to a public area like tinypic that would be handy.
If the display is blank, i thought there was a backlight you can replace that may fix that.

Yes, all of this comes from reading the BOSS. In fact, I can read everything, believe it or not. I must have been lucky... Is it common for them to burn? I used it today for about two hours after work to remove the snow... it worked like a dream with a ton of power. It will turn off if I connect the wires to the charging sensor or the charging switch on the back... there are two wires that are there however and when I connect both to the sensor it starts to whistle and turns off after about 30 seconds. Of all the things, the part that bothers me the most is having to press the auxiliary buttons twice before turning it on. I don't know if they're related. I'm willing to replace the sensor if it's broken.

as stated 9 out 10 sender issues, but that 1 if it an actual low charge can cause irreraple damage, typically I replace sender repair wiring if needed code clears, if not place manual guage in verify charge, press. if low its going somewhere and unit needs shut down . . find why and gon on. REASONS? 9 out 10 sender 5 min fix, manual guage 1hr at shop labour. the math works out to try a sender,
