Picked up a 742 last night. It has a ford 4 cylinder gas engine. Was wondering if anyone ever figured out what exactly the engine crosses over to in a auto application. Some say its the pinto engine, cortina engine, or an early 80's ford escort motor. Not looking to replace my engine, it runs ok. But looking to do tune up, carb rebuild. Any thoughts?

It is an industrial version of the Ford Cortina engine, which was used in very early 1600cc Pinto's. The Escort that it was used in was the UK version, which was rear wheel drive. My neighbour owns a 722 with the same engine. He was able to overhaul his with automotive engine components. HTH - SR

Thanks skidroe. Any idea what year of car it would of came in?

Just looked it up, it was used in the Pinto from 1971-73. Ford referred to it as the "Kent" engine.

Parts for the Ford 1.6 L industrial engine (2274E) can be obtained from Northern Power Products in Eagan, Minnesota.
