Battery Question...l555

My batteries are dead and was wondering if instead of going with 2 batteries which is what the l555 has, one down each side, can I just buy a bigger cca battery and save a little money? Is there any reason there are 2 batteries? Mine has the perkins diesel engine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks.

When I bought my L555 it only had one battery.. a dead one.. not wanting to risk overtaxing another single battery set up I put two in... I don't know if the 2 battery set up helped.. but I have never had a worry starting this (perkins) engine no matter how cold it got.
I never liked the design, it holds long skinny expensive batteries..you'd think with just a couple extra inches for the battery tray areas we'd be able to drop more common sizes in. That's just what I did..I modified mine to hold two 34 group size batteries.. much less costly.
