backhoe questions

hello,
i want to build a couple single arm backhoe's should i make the arm 5 or 6 ft in length
i have one cut out now at 6 ft but with a bucket it will be over 8 ft in length when completed , want to make sure it will have good break out force to do the job with
one will be for my 873 the other will be sold on my local craiglist to recoup some of the cost on material .

The one that we built for the 773 has a 5' boom. The longer you go, the more torque you will put on you bobtach, and the stronger you will have to make it. You won't generate a whole lot of break out force from your bucket cylinders. You get the most from reversing, but as I said, it generates an incredible load on the bobtach. Personally, I would not go longer than 5', or larger than a 3' bore cylinder on the bucket curl. HTH - SR

Do take pictures when you do the build, would be interesting.
I agree that there will be a lot of force on the bobtach locking pins, i wonder if there is a way you can make it so there is some sort of clamp that holds it tighter against the bobtach so the pins don't do all the work.

Hello, i will take some pics of the layout and the finished hoe ,, I use J bolts either 3/8 or 1/2 to help to pull the mounting plate tight into the bobtac , ive used these on several attachments i built on the length all the ones i have seen on the net looked to be 4-5 ft in length i will build one at 5 and one at 4 ft the 4 footer i will sell as my 873 should handle the 5 foot one . on the cyclinders i have several at 3.5 bore at 16 stroke and 4 inch bore with a 24 inch stroke and a couple of 3.5 at 12 inch strokes the 3.5 all have 1 3/4 rods and the 4 inch has 2 inch rods Jess

Wow, that thing is going to be bullet proof!! I (only) used a chunk of 4x4x3/16" wall square tubing for the booms on ours and schedule 80 pipe for bushings. Looking forward to seeing it complete!!

When you weld the pin bosses in place, will the bosses fit flush against the outside plate? On most machines I've seen, the boss extends past the plate by 1/4' TO 1/2" for an extra area for welding up the circumference around the boss. Maybe I haven't seen the entire picture yet, but I figured I would ask anyways. Did you have any more pictures of the finished product??

Hello, the bosses will be flush on the outside , fully welded welded on both sides though , what ive done is copied the dipper on my John Deere backhoe that way i can use the buckets that i have built for it on the dipper/backhoe for the Bobcat . i have it welded up to the bobtac base but i havent done anymore with it just settin outside the shop door for now, been too cold for me to mess with it , http://www.tpub.com/eqopbas/12535_files/image564.jpg

trying to find time to finish some of the projects , working on this over my 3 day weekend . all steel is 1/2 , the arm will be solid steel when it's done , the cyclinder will either be a 4x24 or a 5x36 with 2 inch rods on both , will see how it works out when ready to mount cyclinder ,the arms I added +2 on one and +4 on the other arms . it's all pattered after a JD backhoe so all buckets I have will work on both . don't know how much it's going to weigh but it will be heavy indeed . will post more pics on the project after I mount the cyclinder . Well i can say this project should be all done today , I have never had a project take so long to complete . i had to build a 16 inch bucket for this hoe , as i had a 10 , 20 , and 36 buckets but one was to small or either too large for this hoe , everything on this was made from either flat stock or bar stock , it's a solid hoe fully welded , all construction was 1/2 inch steel , pens were 1, 1 1/4 , 1 1/2 , the cylinder i used was over the top but i had no other plans for this cylinder 45X4.5 bore X 2 inch rod , how do i post pics as the last time i posted it was a hot link to the photo's , i must be gettin too damn old to remember these things . 1 of U

Congrats 1 of U !! I'm sure I'm not the only one here who can relate to taking waaay longer than you originally expected than you thought it would.
Pictures are a bit complicated for this site because of the old software. First, you have to be able to use the HTML tab at the bottom to use the code which will show it in the post. To do this, you can't be using Chrome or Firefox without special add-ons, you have to use a compatible version of Internet Explorer. That will work, or you can add the extension for your non-IE browser to mimic IE which is what I've been doing. I use Chrome and I've installed IE-Tab (link) in it which opens a tab to do things sensitive to IE and it works OK. So do that first. If you have a compatible browser, you'll see this:

Instead of this:

Note at the bottom of the second picture that the HTML text just sits next to the "Design" text. Neither are actually tabs, so they aren't enabled to choose one or the other.
Once that is worked out, you need to link to the photo in the HTML code. You don't need to know HTML but the photo file needs to be uploaded out there somewhere on the internet for the post to link to it. I upload mine to photobucket. It's free and it has links to copy the proper HTML code so you can then pase it into your post (on the HTML tab).
I know it's not simple and my post may not be as clear as a guy would need to get walked through it. But that's all I know to do.
In summary it's three steps. 1) have a compatible IE browser 2) upload your picture somewhere 3) paste the code on the HTML tab for it to be displayed. Note that you can preview your post before committing to it (the button on the lower right).
