Replaced the spool valve seals on my 553 last summer. Over the winter I noticed I still had an annoying drip from the spool valve caps. Thinking I did something wrong, I pulled it back apart tonight and noticed only the top valve is leaking. I cleaned it off and left the cap off and walked away for around 30 minutes. Came back to find the leak is coming from the stud on the end of the spool valve that the spring cup screws on to. I removed it and fluid started running out. I coated the stud with silicon and screwed it back in. Upon coming back inside for the night, I figured I would pull up a parts diagram and see if something was missing. Parts diagram indicates there is supposed to be a plastic plug and o-ring under that one? I didnt see anything down in there, but thats not without saying someone may have been there before me and left them out. Anybody ran into this before? I am starting to think my slicone wont hold if that is missing.

Odd, that bolt is hardly ever removed. New ones are in the kit when you buy it from the dealer.
THey made it out of plastic so it could be removed by adding heat. If you just have silicone in the threads, it will probably push out, but if you siliconed in a bolt, then it should be ok.

The lift spool is drilled for the oil passages for Float. Under the stud is a tiny plastic plug and print. The plug needs to be CAREFULLY drilled out and replaced. The stud loosens up and the seal blows. I rarely have to touch it when I reseal the vavle as its almost never loose. But when they are, they leak. Not part of your problem, but while you're in there, look your wiring over, 553 are harness eaters.

I couldnt see it in there when I looked, but then again I'm not sure what Im looking for. I have one ordered. It will be here in a few days. Guess I'll know then what Im looking for. Strange thing is, it was tight when I tried to loosen it. I'll be happy to not have to clean up the puddles after I park this thing. Dan, I had the engine out last summer as well doing u-joints. Didnt see anything on the harness that looked like it needed attention.

I finally got the parts in, and after catching my local dealer trying to overcharge me...... I got the parts in and my loader is now leak free. Turns out the plastic plug and o-ring was not in the spool valve for what ever reason. Saved my from having to drill it out.

Good to hear it's fixed, how did you catch the dealer our? each dealer has their own pricing structure, so shopping around will give you different figures.

priced them when I ordered them. I asked them to put the parts on the stock order, so there would not be any shipping charges. They agreed. Went to pick them up I was given a total of $14.22. I stated that I asked for them to be ordered on the stock order so there would not be any shipping. Guy behind the counter looked me dead in the eye and said " They where on the stock order and we are not charging you shipping". So I pulled the piece of paper out of my wallet that I wrote the prices on and asked how $2.83 and $1.14 Equals $14.22? Guy behind the counter said "That will be $4.22 with tax". Bad thing is they are the only dealer for 100 miles. Doubt i ever go back. This isnt the first problem with them, but will probably be the last.

Well handled, glad you wrote all the prices down or else you'd be stuffed.

As someone who stood behind the counter, I hate those stories. I went out of my way to make people happy and to keep service bills in check. Answering the phone when were closed. Picking up machines on my personal time with personal truck. Always willing to print out any service info. Talk threw any problem I could on the phone. I don't think I did anything special, just treat the customer right.

Being in the service industry myself, I know when people are going above and beyond and trying to help and recognize it and try to show my thanks . But, I also know how to spot someone doing something they arent supposed to. Going in knowing what the bill should be is a must. We went past a lack of communication or a misunderstanding when he told me he was not charging me shipping, when we both knew he was. Easiest way to loose a customer is to get caught lying, and overcharge in the process. Yeah, it's only $10, but it's $10 I have worked for and am not willing to just give it away.
