Just picked up a 371 for $250 , the previous owner told me that the engine is no good. I checked the oil ( which is full) and it spins free. Would like to check for spark and make sure its getting fuel. Which is the best way to check for spark? Also where's the best place to get a service manual. Figured it's a small investment for a chance at hydraulic power so I'm gonna see if I can get her going..thanks

The easiest way to check for spark is remove the spark plug, rest it against the head with the spark plug wire attached, and crank it over with the starter.
If the engine is shot, they are pretty easy to repower. Check out the repower section. We had a 371, the original engine is pretty anemic, more horsepower would definitely improve performance.

I put a inline spark tester on- resulted in a pretty weak looking spark. I really haven't had a whole lot of time too tinker. I'd like to check points, condenser, and coil yet. Maybe even put a shot of gas in the spark plug and see if I can get anything....then if all else fails do a repower of some sort...

Weak spark is better than no spark.
I think the next thing I would do before spending a lot of time and money on this engine is a compression test. Squirt a bit of oil in the cylinder, install the compression tester, and hold the carb wide open while you are spinning the engine with the starter.
You should be looking for a compression pressure of greater than 90 psi.
