Hello all. First post here. Im looking for some input on my 864 with the Deutz BF4M1011. Last week my customer was running when it started billowing smoke out the exhaust. I hauled it back to the shop and pulled the intake tube off the turbo and poked my finger in to check the impeller. Bearings were toast. Replaced the turbo, changed oil and filter, ran it for approx 30 minutes and changed the oil again. Everything seemed well. The next day it went out on rent again. With less than 2 hrs on the clock it started billowing smoke again. It trashed another turbo. This time I checked compression, 425 across the board. I pulled the head anyway and the gasket looked fine. It has never showed a low oil pressure warning so I "assume" the oil pressure is fine. What are your thoughts?

About two weeks ago now I put a rebuilt turbo on a Deutz 4 cylinder in a Sullair compressor , it's bearings failed , it cost $1,175 to replace the cartraige , the only thing still good was the housings , the Deutz dealer wanted $1,800 plus tax for a new one so it would have been $2,000 with the frieght , the compressor only had 154 hours on it but was 2 1/2 years old and out of warranty , I talked with the turbo guy for a while and he gave me some insight on way it may have failed , he mentioned oil supply , condition of oil , clogged exhaust muffler , breached air intake allowing dirt in , he also made a strong point to change the oil and filter , I could see a glitter of specs in the oil and was affraid it was all inside the engine , so I drained the oil and then poured 5 gallons of diesel thru the filler hole intop the valve cover as fast it would take it to flush it out , I let it drain for about an hour till not a drip was coming out the pan , filled it with oil and changed the filter , ran the unit for about an hour and changed the oil and filter again , I was affraid of the clogged muffler seniro what I did to check it out was stuff a air hose blower nozzle into the exhaust tube and jam a rag with a screw driver in to pipe around the nozzle to plug the hole , turn on the air and found it was free flowing but a lot of oil was blowing out the muffler , when I cranked it up it smoked for about 15 minutes till it got hot and burned and blew all the oil out that was in the muffler ----------------- being that yours failed so quickly I would think it is a oil supply problem , could be remanents of the failed turbo in the oil pan , a weak oil pump or a restriction in the supply or return lines -----------was it new or rebuilt , maybe if it was rebuilt , they did a bad job

The turbo was new. I decided to tear the engine down and do a minor rebuild. I found significant wear in the oil pump. Im hoping lack or oil pressure was the problem. I've never put a gauge on it but also never got a warning either. One rod bearing looks as though something has passed through it but everything else looks good.

I have an 863 with the same engine. Did you pull it to do the teardown? Does the hydro pump come out with it, or do you just grab it with a hydraulic lift, unbolt a buncha stuff and pull it out backwards? :) ---RC

ONE OF THE DEUTEZ FAILURES WAS THE RIBBED DIPSTICK. S/B? IF IT MISSING RIBS THE CAN CAUSE OIL PREES ISSUES THE S/B STATES NOT EXACT BUT CLOSE TAKE A PIECE OF FINE WIRE PLACE A 90 IN IT AND FISH THRU HOLE RIGT SIDE PLUG ABOVE YOU NEED TO CHECK BULLET/ YOU NEED TO CHECK OIL PRESS. THESE TURBOS DONT FAIL WITHOUT AN UNDERLINYG CAUSE, I BELIVE 864 WAS THE FIRST G SO SHOULD HAVE STORED CODES.

Could you post a link to the service bulletin? I don't understand what you're saying.

sorry dude cant but will pull tomorrow and see if i cant get it ou ther without conlicting intrests. ? do you have the ribbed stick and are any missing. new is smooth. i hope you untedrstand my position . s/vc info is protected for obivious resaons. for instance folks crying warrenty on 25 yr old units. the beauty of it is the info is not buried from svc techs. a prime example is youe unit if you brought it in i would no the previous history. of the deutez. saving t/s time and parts and labor .if every issue of all units was posted. to public you can imangine? not all units were affected, dealer personal should be up to date, and once again turbo faliure is rare. you may an underlying cause. from description i would suspect an oil supplly problem. that being said (you did state that turbo was bad) my experiance. point to head gasket. i have seen 2500.00 $ turbos replaced for no reason, other than misdiagonses it makes me sad; pull and inspect glow plugs if she is pumping oil into cyl.s you will see it here.

Are you talking about the engine oil dipstick? And it's supposed to be smooth? I have only seen one dipstick and that's the one in my machine. I don't know what a ribbed dipstick would look like.
