Gang, I need a set of 10-16.5 tires for my 751. Last set (low end tires) only lasted 300 hrs, but much of that work was done on asphalt with no effort to make wider gentle turns rather than spin on a dime. So what's the general opinion on which tires have the deepest lugs for the best traction? From here on out, I will be operating almost exclusively on dirt or topsoil in a forest. Mostly mowing or moving logs or brush. Slopes on the hills can get up to 20 to 25 degrees or more, so traction is important. Very few rocks, so I think sidewall durability or heavy-duty umpteen ply is not top priority. I'll put chains on in the winter for moving snow. Ideas? --- Bob

Think about this Bob, asphalt all the time? bye- bye tires. there is a company that makes asphalt tires with 44/32 rubber on them. Thats over 1 inch of rubber!
I will find ya the link and post it here in this thread for ya.

Those almost look identical to the Galaxy Hulk tires I was going to recommend.

Thnaks, guys. Haven't found these particular tires you mentioned locally, but found a knock-off copy (Brutus brand, I believe) for $145 ea just for the tires. Same store has the no-brand normal skid steer tires for $75. The question is, should I pay twice as much for the tires with a slight additional tread depth? I think the Brutus is about an inch and the standard tire is about 3/4 inch of tread. Doesn't look to me like there would be much difference in traction, but I seek advice from those of you with more experience. The real question, what's the comparison in wear and traction between the el cheapo and the better tread? ---Bob

Personally I'm a fan of inexpensive tires, after ruining caseing on a couple different tires I just decided it would be easier to take destroying a $75 tire rather then a $150 one. I don't see where the inexpensive tire performs any poorer in regards to traction. Of course a tire with more tread dept should wear longer. I run steel tracks 90 % of the time , to improve traction and floatation, and a a result I can get 7 to 800hrs out of a set of tires, If I don't tear a giant hole in one somehow, which I think could "happen" to any tire, even the expensive ones. I usually work in a rural setting where I don't have to make sharp turns, and mostly in dirt. In terms of tire wear, from best to worrst Snow and Ice are best, then dirt and sand ,followed by concrete then asphalt. Avoid the sharp turns if possible, thats where the tire $ go. Ken
