I have a customer with an older 543. I had to go to his job site to take a look at it this afternoon. engine starts fine. Bucket goes up, down, and tilts. left side wheels turn as normal. right rear wheel appears to be trying to move but doesn't. Right front wheel turns fine. Now I am an automive tech, not a tractor mechanic, can someone clue me in as to what I should be looking for? If I had a manual this would be easier. Is there a chain adjustment that will hep, or are these rigs purely hydraulic. If it's hydraulic, are the motors hard to replace? The machine is 10 miles from my shop in some guys backyard and cannot be moved. It only spins in circles. I can't even get it on the trailer. Help!

Each side is powered by 1 hydrostatic motor, both axles on each side are joined together by chain and gears. It may have stripped a gear that runs the chain for the rear wheel and has locked the wheel up, this may be why you can't get it to drive in a straight line. You can remove the inspection cover that has the park brake attached to the top of it. Look inside and see if you can see the gear that drives the chain. If it has removed any teeth, you will have to drain the chain case and clean out any metal fragments then re-fill it.
Good luck

Thanks for the info. I'll look this afternoon and let you know what I find. Are the sprockets hard to replace? Simple dissassembly and reassembly? Are there any seals that should be replaced in the chain case? Thanks again for the help!

I have never had to replace them, but from what the service manual shows, it seems easy. The only problem is how tight the bolts are. If it is indeed the sprockets you will need to do the bolts up to tension, if you need that information just yell. As for seals, the only one you will need is the chain case one, i would just use the old one with a bit of silicone.

I forgot to mention that you are best to cover the socket with a rag when tightning or un-doing these bolts. They are so tight that if the socket was to shatter you could be seriously hurt. At the very least, wear eye protection.

OK, Thanks to my trusty impact and some ingenuity, I have the 453 bobcat all apart in my shop. After removing the cover where the park brake attatches I found a broken drive chain. The sprockets look good, but the chain is still partially wrapped arounmd the rear sprocket. Not a big problem, except that it is doubled back on itself in the upper rear corner of the chain case. I cannot get my arm far enough inside to set it right so I can remove it. I have tried using a piece of welding rod to work the chain back in place, but alas... It is stuck but good. Anyone have a tip for this one?

After studying the situation for a bit I removed the drive motor and was able to slide the sprockets out of the way. This granted enough room to get my arm inside the chain case. after quite a bit of struggling and working by feel I finally got the broken chain out of the case! Hurray! The new parts should be here soon and my customer will have his machine back. Any tips on reinstalling the chains? Thanks all the help!

I got a used 453 from Herculaneum Mo. that when I got it home and of the trailer the front left wheel locked up, after opening it up, found out the one new chain they put on came off, after contacting the sales man he ofered to pay for the master link, thanks, after opening it replaced all four of the chains that I got from the local farm store, 60H chain. much stronger looking and cheper than bobcat, and did it from the front brake cover.
