As a part of my 853 restoration process, I took it apart to repaint. Since it was in pieces, and all the hydraulic/engine parts had been removed, I was curious how much each component weighed. Using my Harbor Freight 1 ton gantry and a 2,200 pound crane scale I bought from Amazon, I got the below results. Rely on these results at your own peril - I paid $72 for the scale. Pics are below.
  • Upper body: 805 pounds
  • Lower body: 501 pounds
  • Arms: 570 pounds
  • Bob-Tach: 171 pounds
  • Cab: 327 pounds
  • Engine and engine driven hydraulic/hydrostatic motors: 780 pounds
Total: 3,154 pounds

I did weigh the hydraulic/hydrostatic motors after removing them from the engine. They weigh 156 pounds. That gives an implied engine/starter/alternator/etc weight of 624 pounds (780-156)

With an operating weight of 6,497 pounds, that implies the below items weigh 3,343 pounds (6,497-3,154):
  • Drive components (gears/chains) and motors
  • Cooling components
  • Hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and tubings
  • Exhaust components
  • Tires/wheels/axles/bearings/races
  • Gearcases
  • Steering control sticks and associated frame
  • Fuel tank
  • Bucket
  • All liquids: Fuel/oil/coolant
  • Hardware, etc.

Very cool. I'm planning to do the same project on my machine. I was researching to find out what size gantry crane to get.

Any words of wisdom when separating the upper and lower body mainframe parts?
Use two chain hoists. Once you start lifting, you'll find out if your floor isn't level pretty quick, so some type of clamp on the beam, adjacent to a trolley wheel, to keep the trolleys from rolling. Putting the upper and lower frame back together, I used a car dolly under each wheel to allow for alignment/positioning. Obviously that means axles were reinstalled beforehand. Note that a few of the body bolts in the back are longer than the rest to allow for added thickness - the battery tray was one area I remember that had the longer bolts.
