If everything works out I will be picking up a 1300HD soon. Looking for any information or PDF's that you can share. Has a v1903 and there are wiring problems, what is needed to make it start relay-able - just 12v to the starter solenoid & glow plugs or is there more need - manual fuel pump and shutoff? It was told it has a power problem but will start and run with black smoke until it warms up then it goes away, he could not get it to start when I was there - the left cab panel was off and he was paying with the wires. A friend pull the head and did something with the valves and new head gaskets but no change (planing on a compression test after I get it home). He is not totally sure what was truly done but thinks the valves where lapped. There is oil at the top of the radiator should I be worried - enough to coat my finger but I am assuming this is from removing the head, will be doing a radiator pressure test to make sure. Or should I just look for another engine? A local guy has a Isuzu 2.2 for $700 from a refer trailer.

I can't help with most of the power issues, never worked on one of those machines.
I think the re-wiring shouldn't be too nasty, just trace them to see what goes where and where the damaged part is. There should be a fuel shut off solenoid, you need power to the hold coil to keep it working and power to the pull while cranking, i wired one up to the starter, as it cranks the pull coil works.
As for an engine, worst case, a running V2203 is 1,000-1,500 off ebay.
It could be a bad head gasket, but Kubota engines are known for cracking heads.
The black smoke could also be an injector issue. What i do is take the injectors out, hook up the small tube like to #1 delivery nozzle on the pump and hook up the injectors out the back of the machine. Crank and see what the spray pattern looks like. It should be a narrow cone without any drips forming on the nozle.
