I was plowing this weekend and whenever I'd back up, I'd notice a strange burning smell. I thought it was the heater at first, but I put it on full and didn't notice anything coming from the vents. So I got out and opened the engine compartment. Sniffed around and couldn't smell anything. Then when I walked through the exhaust path, it hit me. Smelled nothing like the normal diesel exhaust I usually smell. Didn't really smell like oil or fuel. Maybe antifreeze? It was very cold out (sub zero) and I didn't have time to check things over. I parked it and will look at it as soon as I have time. Anyway, I'm looking for some advice on what to check and in what order. I assume: 1. Check coolant level. 2. Check oil (smell and color?). 3. Check exhaust color? 4. What else? It's a 2003 model, 1900 hours and not used hard. Home use.
