I took on a challenge, I think. A friend of mine, bought a 743 with a blown motor. Instead of having the motor possibly repaired, he chose to go a "quick route" and bought a used reefer motor (V2203 DI).
I have read in some forums, this is kind of a popular option, as the V1703 motors are hard to find.
I have changed out the oil pans, as the 743 pan fits right on. The oil pickups are the same, so I didn't have to fool with that.
As for the dipstick, it was not drilled on the reefer motor, at least on the side, as the 1703. However, I did find a rubber plug on the injector side, at the same height as where the dipstick hole should be. I pulled the plug out, and found the original dipstick will stick right in. It seems that Kubota was thinking, and made that option available.
As for the back engine plate, I bolted the reefer motor mount to the bobcat mount, clamped them in a drill press, and re drilled necessary holes. I also traced out the larger diameter of the middle hole, as the V2203 has a larger rear engine seal plate, than the V1703.
The front motor mount had to be modified, or rebuilt completely, as it will not work, as it is.
With the motor mounted in the bobcat, and floor of the bobcat level, I leveled the engine front to back, and built the front mount.
As for the intake, being the V2203 is a DI engine, and having manifold heat, I had to find an intake with the opening facing towards the rear of the bobcat, as the manifold heater, would hit the air chute in the machine.
I cut off the heater mounting plate, and welded in 2, 90 degree cast elbows, (same ID) to the manifold, then re welded the manifold heater mounting plate to it. So now, it faces toward the rear of the motor. Re-ducting the pipe to the air cleaner won't be that hard to mock up. I did install a smaller, but newer air filter assembly in place of original, as I was having room, issues.
I planned to use the 1703 valve cover, but the exhaust pipe runs right over the filler cap, so I used the original valve cover, and drilled a hole in front, for an actual oil filler spout and cap, I found on Amazon.
I am going to use the original fuel shutoff solenoid, so I will wire it up to the ignition switch.
The Throttle lever is much shorter, than the original, and this motor wouldn't let me swap out the timing cover, as things wont line up and sea. So hoping it will work. Being that the throttle lever on the motor has a much shorter throw, than the throttle lever throw on the bobcat, I came up with a solution, that seems to work.
This is where I am right now. I have some questions, I am hoping can be answered here.
#1. On the V2203 DI engine, a primer pump is installed on the motor. Is that just a primer, or is it also a fuel pump? So maybe, do I have to install an electric fuel pump?
#2. Having some doubts about how I need to attach the fuel lines. I looked at a reefer trailer's motor, and am kind of confused, as it routes way different, than what I'm thinking. It also has an extra fuel line running to the fuel filter, and is Tee-d, into the return line. Do I need that on the fuel filter, and is it because of it using an electric fuel pump?
If someone could draw out a simple routing diagram I could follow, I would be greatly appreciative.
#3. The 742 was originally, had glow plugs on the motor, and has the wiring, and relay for it. Am hoping to use the glow plug relay, to activate the manifold heater on the reefer motor.
While looking at the setup in the reefer, I noticed heavier wires running to the manifold heater, looked like either 6 or 8 gauge wire. Hoping the relay, which is the same as the engine starter circuit, will be heavy enough to add the heavier wire, and use on the manifold heat.
I've read that Bswwood, a member on this site, has done a few swaps like this, and hoping he will read this, and help me out, as well as anyone else that has an answer to my questions.
If I receive enough inquiries, I can post pictures of what I have done, and maybe help someone else out.
Hope to hear from others, who have dared.
