"New Guy" introduction. Just bought a M-160

Hello guys, Just wanted to say "hello"! I just bought a 1976 M-160, my first skid steer. Bought it from the original owner, machine is in pretty good shape, needs a little TLC, but nothing to major. One quick question- Being that this machine has the belt drive will it free wheel or coast (is it moveable if not under power)? Reason I ask is that it's not running currently due to a bad starter. I'll get pic's up ASAP. Hope to have it home this weekend and looking forward to gaining much need expertise from you guys! Thanks!

Nope, the wheels are not able to free wheel. call a tow truck, they will be able to move it with their winch. It sucks when they break down.

The only belt drive machine made in 1976 was the M-610 series (not M-160). Yes it is able to 'free wheel'……..as are ALL of the belt driven Bobcats. Keep the speed extremely slow as they were not made for speed. Be sure the handles are in the neutral position.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on you latest acquisition!
Moving it on a trailer is the usual method of transport, unless you are only towing it a few hundred feet. These machines are not too heavy, a car trailer will handle them without issue.

Thanks guys and sorry for the "typo"! Yes, it is a M-610 (not a 160! lol!). The previous owner is generously delivering it for me but I'll need to move it about 100' on my drive way. I know it needs a starter and new battery, also planning to change all the fluids and a tune up. Any particulars I need to check on this model?

A 100' move will be no problem. If you are going to pull the starter……it will be a good time to change the hydro filter as well. Also…….while you are there……use a small mirror and a flashlight and check the bushings inside the jackshaft sheave. It is the sheave with the three pins and the large spring……place the mirror so that you are looking down the three pins and observe whether or not the bushings have been ovaled out. There is a grease zert that needs grease on a regular service basis on that sheave. Many more things but that will get you started.

I'm following eboucher.6's thread as it looks like his machine is quite similar to mine although a few years older. Went to my local NAPA today and bought a new battery and was pleased to learn they can get me all the filters and pretty much most items I might need for the VH4D engine.

Hey guys, Well progress is slow but it's getting there! New starter came and I got that installed yesterday (boy was that FUN!!! LOL!), just waiting for the new ignition parts to come and I'll get them in and hopefully see if she'll fire up. Also need a fresh propane tank to actually run it, but I'll be happy to her it fire. Still having fun!!!

Sorry for the long lapse.....work and life in general has kept me busy and not much time for the 610. I finally got her started! Which is a GREAT feeling and a relief that nothing major appears to be wrong with the engine, however it will only run with the choke fully closed (my machine has the Wisconsin VH4D and it runs on propane) and only runs at idle speed. I have no throttle action. I have two 40lb. tanks for it, one is the original and I just purchased a used newer tank so I'd have a spare. I'm confident the original has fuel but I'm getting both checked and refilled tomorrow. I ordered and installed a new fuel shut off/filter thinking maybe it was only opening partly or was clogged, the new valve seems to be working fine so I'm moving to the carb/regulator. This is where I'm in un-charted water. I haven't worked on many LPG engines and not familiar with the "carb". Any help is appreciated.

Sorry Fire…….I can't even keep my barbecue running. Hopefully someone on here has experience with the LPG setups. I'll dig around and see if I have any of the old manuals for some help.

Hello guys..... Sorry for the "lapse", this spring/summer was just to busy and the 610 slipped to the back burner. I finally got time to pull the carb, intake manifold, exhaust manifold and the propane vaporizer. Media blasted the manifolds, cleaned a TON of much out of the carb and some from the vaporizer and guess what? She fired right up and runs like a watch!!! I installed new manifold gaskets and a new muffler and she's running great. No to test out the drive functions..... Wish me luck! LOL! On a side note: If anyone needs a good used starter I have one for sale. I bought a new one on the recommendation of the previous owner. However before installing the new one I added a new battery and the original starter spun over the Wisconsin with no trouble (I'm guessing he thought the starter was bad when it was just a tired battery). So before it goes on the auction site, thought I'd offer it up here first. Just looking for a reasonable offer, keep in mind shipping cost unless your in the north/central Illinois area, then pick up is welcome.

Intake parts do like a good clean, glad it was such an easy fix, give it a bath and it's happy.

It's really not much different than a standard gas engine. The carb is actually very simple. I'm no expert, but after tearing it apart it's not to bad. I just hope my clutches and drive assemblies are working. Hydraulics seem to be functioning fine. Hope to be moving dirt is a few weeks!
