New guy here. Log splitter make sense?

I just bought a new Mustang MTL-16. It's gonna be a little workhorse around the farm & also get lots of hours cutting hedge & cedar in my pastures with a tree shear. I got to pondering (a dangerous thing to do) about building a log splitter to go on the front end. We heat our house, shop, some buildings & the tank heaters with wood. Anyone done this? Are there good commercial ones? What to look for? Vertical or horizonal? Any idees would be a big help! Much obliged, Mustang Gregg Table Rock, Nebraska

I made my own with it on a bobtach plate it will work either vert or horiz got the valve and wedge from northern tools all in all very good investment my little guy loves to run the handle as long as I keep the fingers out of the way it is all good Jeff

Do you have plans for the splitter? What was the total cost to build? Did you get the hose and fittings from Northern Tools?

You can get dang near everything from Northern, to build a log splitter. It is a popular homebuild project. The coolest one I have seen for a skid steer, was a horizontal model with the splitter turned upside down. You operate it from the cab, and just leave the logs on the ground, the splitter goes over the log, splits it, and the pieces fall away. Another neat thing about it, you can use it as a grapple of sorts on logs to position them for cutting with your chainsaw. Seems like it would save alot of labor, picking up each piece to be split, and positioning it on a splitter either vert or horizontal.

I have built a wood splitter, you can check out all the details in the "Homemade" forum. Check out my homemade treeshear too if you want. As far as commercial splitters go I like the one like mine from quality wellding service. They are simply awesome for the big stuff. I split the big wood down with the skid splitter and then cut it down to regular size with a separate self powered splitter and 4-way wedge. Whatever you do I would recomend getting as long as stroke as possible. 5" ram @ 3000psi has plenty of snuff, I have only stopped it twice and that was on some big Elm blocks. Out.
