Thought I had ran out of things to break but just snapped the sheave side of my split jackshaft. Can these be repaired or should I just replace? Do I need to replace both shafts? Anyone have a used setup for sale? Thanks for your input.

Mightymouse……was that you that just had to replace the belt? If so, there's probably a connection. Anyway…..you only need to replace the one side. First thing is to determine whether it's a 'straight' shaft or a 'tapered'. I have never heard of repairing one……very dangerous in my view.

It wasn't me who replaced the belt but I did just put a brand new engine, hydraulic pump and lift cylinder seals in. I'm having trouble finding any jack shafts online even. According to my manual it is the tapered shaft as well. Anyone out there parting out an old machine?

So here's my advice……you need to be careful with this purchase. There was a pt# break at about 41413….a pt# break at 2282 for straight and tapered shafts and then additionally three different lengths from shaft end to taper shoulder (3 7/8, 4 1/4, and 4) in the tapered shafts. I would probably go 'dealer' on this one and have the serial number to order the part……this may be a major PITA. The last one of these I bought ran $180.00……that was probably 2 years ago.

Sounds like good advice to me. I'll take it apart tomorrow so I can get exact measurements. Did they hide a serial # any other place than on the little plate below the seat? The only numbers visible are 444 on my plate.

I am not positive on the 444……however on the 500, 600 and 610……..Right hand side, under the chain case viewing panel gasket between the two upper, forward most studs will be a number stamped. I believe in the case of the 444 it will be a four digit number (but not positive)

I'm hoping you have the tapered shaft. A couple of these are no longer available but the good news is that we can eliminate a couple of them as they were made for the Electric Motor models so that cuts down on options.

You may have to hunt for a dealer but they are still can be gotten from Bobcat . I just replaced a tapered one on my 500 . There are lots of those belt drive machines around here so the dealers know how to find parts . I don't know if this is allowed But TIMMER IMPLEMENT IN AITKIN MN can get the shaft 218 927 2515 .

Item (1) Looks like the shaft is tapered with the 3 7/8" end. I have a few feelers out for the part. Item (2) the threaded portion of the 3 bolts attached to the stationary sheave are a bit bent and twisted (see pic). the lower portion where the other sheave slides on looks and feels as if they are still straight. Will there be an issue reinstalling it like this? Any tips on how i'm gonna compress the spring? Item (3) one of the bearing housings has alot of slop, anyone know the part # or where I can get them? they are at the top right of the pic with the jackshaft halves. Thanks again! photo stationary sheave.jpg photo IMG_20160416_181340.jpg photo IMG_20160416_174738640.jpg

The shaft part #6503352 that you gave in another thread is the correct one for your machine. You can not use the shaft out of M37s machine (pt#6503348…the common tapered shaft of M-600/M-610) as it is 3/16" longer and I do not know if there is a way to compensate for that variance. You will need to check with Bobcat for availability. Second…..I would replace the three pins/studs ($32.00 each) as well as the five bushings in the other sheave half ($2.00 and $19.00 respectively). Third…..the bearings you are looking for are (Farnir, Timken etc.) RA104RRB…..I see some on Amazon for $20.00 each right now. Last….check thrust bearings and races as well as clutch linings for replacement at this time. (Clutch linings appear fine in the pics)

Also…..that sure seems like a lot of shims used behind the one drive gear???

not sure what was going on with the shims behind one drive gear. The other side had none. I sure found a mountain of metal junk at the bottom of the tanks tho! I found a shaft out of Wisconsin for about $180. The part number matches and they are gonna send me a pic and dimensions on Monday to make certain. The clutches look good inside and out. The jackshaft bearings seem ok but one of the pillow blocks has worn away so much the the bearing is very loose. I may just replace both sides. Are there gaskets for the bearing assembly? I could just make some I suppose. Man! those pin/studs are expensive. Thanks so much for your help 6brnorma!

in case others are in need of the jackshaft bearing housing/ bearing this is what I found from Loaderpartssource.com http://www.loaderpartssource.com/new-sealed-1-1-4-self-aligning-bearing-and-housing-assembly-with-lock-collar-for-bobcat-444-500-600-610.html It is the pillow block housing, sealed bearing and locking collar , all for $26.56 I just wish there was a gasket included or at least available.

I'll get you the pt# for the pillow block and bearing combo tomorrow. Gasket is Bobcat pt#6502341 ($5.78)…..I'm sure with a little research they are available from other sources. Yes……those pins are downright pricey. And……….you are welcome, appreciate the thanks.

Nice job on the pillow block.

On second thought…….I can not see the opposite side of that bearing. A number of bearing houses sell a bearing/housing combo as a replacement for the bobcat bearing/housing. The problem is that the bearing will have a lip on the other side that is not present on the Bobcat bearing. As a result…when you bolt the housing to the frame it presses the bearing to the sidewall and it is no longer 'self-aligning'. Be sure that is not the case before you use it.

Digging through old manuals based on the serial number you gave…….that number is one of the older numbers and came original with a straight shaft (no longer available) and appears to have been updated to a conversion that was used (and came standard) on 444s with serial #2282 and above. That part number is pt#6554942 and the manual clearly states that is the number for the M-444 and clearly states that pt#6503352 is for the M-500 and the M-600D. I can not find specs on the #6554942 shaft but according to this manual……that is the shaft you should be looking for unless you can find further information to the contrary. Possibly……..the large number of shims used was due to an incorrect shaft????

Its been a while since I had mine down but one side has a bunch of shims the other side none . I think it only has to do with the sproket alignment I think the shims were on the left side

Now I'm nervous about which jack shaft to order. As mentioned above the manual states #6554942 for the M444 and #6503352 for the M500. I can't find any specs on either part to compare to what I have taken out of my machine. I've attached a pic of the broken shaft with dimensions. Maybe someone out there can tell which part I have. My bobcat dealer in town says that the 6554942 is not available anymore but when I call an implement dealer in Aikin MN they say they can get either shaft but can't tell me the difference between the 2. OOF! If it's just a matter of length I feel I could shim or adjust accordingly but if it's a matter of diameter that has me worried. photo jackshaft.jpg
