Sorry to hit you with a problem in my first post, but I've searched through your threads and can't find anything that matches my machine's glitch. I recently bought an LS 170 for around my acreage. It runs perfectly, from what I can tell, and has a sweet motor, but hydraulic oil has been building up in the pan and therefore dropping in the reservoir. Using a mirror and a torch, I tracked in down to seepage from between the left and right drive hydro pumps with the drive lever (only tried left) fully forward or reversed. My question is, is it possibly just the gasket between the pumps, or is it a sign of a larger problem, such as excessive pressure? As I said, the machine runs well. Thanks.

Sounds like where I would start make sure you keep the tank filled so you don't burn it up
I don't suppose a tandem drive pump from a John Deere 260 skidsteer would fit into a NH LS170? I have one available here in Queensland if they are compatible.

As a matter of interest I've run a hydro charge system pressure test and a case drain test and both were within specs. I intend to remove the system as soon as I can and have a look at the problem. Does anyone know the make and model of the hydro system on an LS170?

Back again. I removed the hydrostatic pumps and now have a new problem. There's a possibility that the problem was a leaking hydraulic hose that drives the left hand motor. I have a photo of it but can't see how to post it (I'll look into it and see if I can work it out and post one). But I have to go back to my original question. Is there anyone in the New Holland world who has experienced a leak between the pumps and the dual back plate? When I was investigating the leak (which is bad under pressure- 3 inches drop in the hydraulic reservoir in half an hour) the best I could do was to place a mirror in the belly and shine a torch into it. The leak appeared to be seeping out of the joint between the rear pump and the back plate. But looking at the condition of the high pressure hydraulic hose at the bottom of the back plate it may well be the problem, and the oil may have been running along the join. Before I take it in for a re-seal, can someone who knows these pumps please tell me if it's possible or probable for a leak between the pumps and the back plate. Thanks.

Not to likely. There is a metal gasket between the pump housings and the center block. Unless the bolts are loose they won't leak.

Thanks Mike. I was hoping you would respond. It all looks tight, so I'll pressure test that hose and if it leaks I'll re-install the pumps. Obviously the hose needs replacement anyway. So hard to see what's leaking down there.... Thanks again, much appreciated.

Rossluck, I have a LX 665 and I had a leak in my pumps also that had me stumped for quite some time. From what i could tell with the limited visibility under the pumps was that it was the seal between the drive pumps. I Finally just ordered all the O-rings and seals for the drive pumps, charge pump and lines.. Once i pulled the stack of pumps out and started taking everything apart every O-ring was brittle and hard as a rock. The leak was actually coming from the trunnion cover witch is the covers on the bottom of the drive pumps with the torques head screws, under those covers is a cap with a O-ring under it. that is ware my leak was those O-rings were junk. If i was you i would order all new O-rings and seals and replace them . I hope this helps I looked and looked on the web and was never able to find anything on it.

Thanks Jake, for your response. I managed to get to the bottom of my problem some time ago. I took the pump out, and took it all apart and couldn't actually find a fault. It was only when I was putting it all back together and following the manual that I discovered that two bolts were missing from under the pump. I searched the pan with a torch and found them. The threads were in good condition so i cleaned them, used locktite primer and thread locker, and its been running beautifully since. I two packed it this xmas and have new decals. I like it. Thanks again for your interest.
