Yes. I brought this 1981 and not working and no history on this. Also I have no knowledge on diesel motor nor skid steer. I know alot about cars. On this, I know the left wheel chain assembly has missing parts but I want to concentrate on the engine if any good. My question 1: is the engine seized or the hydro pump is like a transmission that needs to be in neutral or running? 2: of course, I will clean out the fuel tank. Then I remove the glow plugs and pour Wd40. So my question: how can i turn the engine? Does it have flywheel?

On the radiator end of the engine there is a splined shaft sticking out past the pulley that is on it. That is the end of the crankshaft. I wrapped it with rags and used a pipe wrench to turn it. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THESPLINES ON THIS SHAFT

Thanks. Now once I do get it running. Can the hydraulic pumps get damage if the hydro. Oil is bad. I am guessing if I do get the engine running, I should turn off the engine after a few seconds running. Right?

What do you mean by bad. Water Dirt or what. There is a cover between the wheels on the sides of this machine that allows you to get into the gear case. I would take a container and go to the bottom of the gear case and get an oil sample. Put it in a clear glass jar and set it up for a week or so. See if there is water or anything else settle out of it. DO NOT RUN YOUR HAND IN THE gear case as there may be metal shavings in there. Check your fuel tank for alage as this will cause a lot of problems. I would treat the whole fuel system with an alage side if it was me. Put a good battery in it and clean fuel then bleed the fuel system and see what happens

I would not pour anything inside that engine. You may get a big surprize if you do. You can use starting fluid in the air filter but use very little ass it could damage the engine. WD 40 will also work as starter fluid

Thanks for the tips. I'll get some pics uploaded. The info I know for a fact. Previous owner left the side cover of the chain case slightly opened (with only one nut) And the top bolt/adjuster cover is missing. So I going this clean this first according to y'all tips. Also, it's not a lot money spend in cleaning this. I would like to get engine started before invested any money/time. I got serial # and comes up as Perkins engine. Info from Internet says it's mostly used for boats. in those years 1979 new Holland used a Ford and Perkins engine. I also brought l555 manual but it's very basic.

Mine has a Kubota V 1902B engine in it. I did not know they put a Perkins in the L 555 and 553. Go to a NH dealer web site and yu can pull up the parts diagram foryour machine.. Many of the parts from NH can be bought after market for a lot less money

I can't upload pics. Why? I found another issue. I am guessing the left side chains case has the brake assembly. Maybe that's why there's broken gear teeth. Anybody knows how the brake works on this skids.

You can post pictures, but it takes a bit of doing. They have to be hosted on a site where the link will end in .jpg or .jpeg, not someplace like Insta or Pinterest that just has a character string.*
All of the html coding needs to be entered by hand, including the header. I'm told that the htlm editor works for some people, but I think the site was optimized for IE3. I use firefox and just get a blank box, like doing a webpage in notepad.
Also, there is no post-editing function, so use the preview to catch any typos or errors before hitting post.

*you can also create an album here and link back to it, see Photos in the menu at the top of the page.

Gabe200, On my 555 the brake is in center between your legs. There is two gears and a long round bar that engages the gears when you push the peddle in front of you. There is no brake in the chain case. Mine is newer and has Kubota engine. When you put the top covers on I made gaskets for them so water could not get in. Good luck as mine is a very good machine.
