I have a 2015 New Holland L230. A few weeks ago, it made some sort of noise, which I didn't witness and white smoke blew out the exhaust. A mechanic felt around inside the turbo and was satisfied that there wasn't a problem with it since there also was not excessive oil in the surrounding hoses. It was a little low on coolant, but the oil was and is not milky. So, we've been using it for a few weeks with no problems until a couple of days ago. It began blowing black smoke and used a quart or more of oil in just a couple of hours or less (if I can trust that Marco checked the oil that morning and it was at the top of the hash marks.) I read that the air filter being clogged could cause that, but it isn't more than a month old. I'll have the mechanic back to check it out if it continues to happen, which I assume it will, but I wanted to get some opinions. Thanks.

well you didn't mention how many hours are on this motor, so might want to add that info for some better guesses!

black smoke mean burning oil, and there is a list of things that can cause that, few are GOOD or easy fixes or these days cheap

not to get into the weeds but blue smoke is oil ,black is over fueling, white is coolant or on start-up a cold engine, normally. gotta have that disclaimer.

It's got 8126 hours. Thanks mrbb. I changed the air filters hoping it would be as simple as not enough air. I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and take it to the shop. Thanks for your input.

at that many hours, compression should be checked would be my suggestion

The compression is fine. So, we're going to crack it open and check the head gasket and hope the head isn't cracked. Thanks for your input.
