JD Skidsteer - has progressively got worse - (we have gone into winter) - cranks but wont start - blow a lot of black smoke when cranking - but stops when started and working - little to no suction in intake - in at the JD service department but they cant work out what is going on - any ideas? we are in australia. Cheers!

black smoke indicates either not enough air(plugged up air cleaner, faulty turbo) or pump is over fueling . I am sure there are other reasons too. Have you checked glow plugs or what ever it uses for cold weather start assist.

Genrally when cranking and the compression is low, you will get white smoke, not black. As mentioned, black smoke is excessive fuel (not enough air) but i have not seen that while cranking before.
How does it run when you do get it started, no smoke or lack of power?
It could be as simple as bad glow plugs
