JD Model 170 will not turn or go in reverse

I just bought a JD model 170 it worked a couple of times,then I started to have some reluctance to turning ,it started to hesitate turning,I checked the hydrolic oil and it was down about 5 gallons,I bought hydrolic oil for tractors and after I put the oil in it would not turn ay all and would not back up, anybody have ideas what the problem is..any advise is appreciated. Thanks

sorry this is an old thread. manuals are still avail through Deere for your unit. i have a 1700 Owatanna (OMC) Mustang - Same unit - parts interchange between the two - Owatanna built them both. I just picked my machine up a couple weeks ago. Mine uses red automotive Automatic Transmission fluid, because it has the 4 drive clutches - 2 on each side, 1 for forward and 1 for reverse on each side. don't know if that helps or not. thanks much.
