Hydraulic Fluid?

What are we using for hydraulic fluid since Case discontinued the HTO additive? I was told by a guy at a place that used to sell Case that I could use HD46 hydraulic oil. My machine is a 1835B but not sure what year, I want to say 1982.

I’ve been using the equivalent of Mobil 424. Any top shelf hydraulic fluid should do. I would want to see a 10-30 viscosity and plenty of antiwear additive. I would avoid the “AW” fluids as they are have mid level antiwear concentration content.

aw-46 is used on many systems, it is 15 weight hydro oil which is a good weight for average temp. climates.

I don’t see anything about it that I don’t like.

Regarding the AW hydraulic fluids, they typically have antiwear additive (such as ZDDP) concentrations in the mid hundreds PPM range, say 400-600 PPM, where the premium hydraulic oils with have antiwear additive levels in the 1000+ PPM. In a gear pump system I would be OK with an AW oil, but not in an axial piston pumps system which is what skid steer hydros are. Most of the drive motors are axial piston also, but the 1835B is an exception to that. Premium hydraulic oil is cheap compared to a failed axial piston pump. Been there, done that.

Yes, regarding hydraulic oils. Pump manufacturers have specifications for the oils recommended in their systems, and they trump the machine manufacturers. Those specs should be on the container or available. Here are a few.
Vickers - 1-286-S, M-2950-S.
Cincinnatti Machine - P-68, P-70, P-69.
Dennison - HF-0/TSC, HF-0/T5D

Must meet ASTM D943 and have an AGMA rating of at least grade 1.

Yes, if they meet pump manufacturers specs. Read the fine print, not the glossy label.

Since Case/NH quit specifying the "smurf fluid", they switched to 10-30w motor oil. I know that Takeuchi specifies the same for the hydraulic system.

I've been running 100% synthetic 0w40 with hto for over a decade to cover all seasons. (-35*-+35*C) and hto is still available in my area.
When the time comes, I'll have to refer to saurer danfoss recommended fluid alternatives.

The axial piston pumps (hydro pumps) were made by Vickers, the dual gear pump (equipment pump and hydro charge pump) were made by Cessna; the original geroller drive motors were made by Ross/TRW. Case replacement drive motors will be Parker to my latest knowledge.
