Hello I recently bought a 743 and am in the process of changing all the fluid and filters. I just did the fuel filter and when I changed it there was no diesel in it and one of the lines going to the mount looks like it's been cut off. Is this just a vent or a return line or has someone bypasses it completely and is just using the inline filter? I looked online and can't find any diagrams show or explaing where the hose are suppose to go or what they are for. Thanks!

I believe if my memory is right the fuel tank goes to a manual primer bulb(like a portable boat tank uses) then it goes to the fuel filter leaves the fuel filter and goes to the lift pump on the injector pump housing.

Okay it's definitely been bypassed then looks like mine goes primer bulb little inline glass tube? ( I'm guessing to see if air is in the system, doesn't look like a filter) and then straight to what I'm guessing is the injector pump. Small circle on side of the engine and then goes up to injectors. Is there any reason other than it leaking why someone would bypass the fuel filter?

what I remember about those housings is that they are messy when you change the filters out . And they put them in a place that is not as easy as it should be to get at. aside from that maybe the housing it self has a issue or they could not find the correct filter, who knows. But those little glass filters are 100 micron I think and you would want a filter that will filter out smaller particles than that, but it is better that nothing.

Before I noticed the filter was bypassed I put a new one on and noticed the glass bowl had a chip in it so I'm guessing it was leaking so they just bypassed it. Anywho I'll have to fix that, I was also wondering tho where is the fuel shut off valve on this machine?

I do not think there is one, if you have a adjustable brake line hose clamp use that, if not use vise grip with some padding and do not tighten to much. That valve would be a good thing to add, also if you have to replace the fuel filter housing convert it to a canister filter , they are so much easier to work with and no glass. IMO, check out the primer bulb for rot too. And the fuel pick -up tube in the fuel tank they are bad for snapping when they get old so look at that too. which makes me thing the pick up comes from the top of the tank so that is why there is no fuel shut off from factory. good luck

Thank you! I have another question now if you don't mind lol. My bucket pin will not take any grease I broke 2 grease guns trying to force it in and the hoses just blew out of the grease gun. I took the nipple off and it has fresh grease and so dose the "hole" it goes into but won't go last there. I tried it with the bucket in different positions as well. Any tips?

there is a company out there that makes a grease nipple cleaner for lack of a better term. What it does it uses oil instead of grease, once you use it it loosens things up whereas grease can then be added so I have read I have not used one. It might free up if you have someone operate the bucket as pressure is applied to the zerk. Of course if you can drive the pin out and clean it off but that might require heat, and bad language.

I had the same problem with the grease nipples on an 06 S220 that I recently worked on. On a couple of them the nipples were toast, a couple of others, unscrewed the nipples and used a pick to scrape the old caked on grease out of the hole and that worked. One had an issue where there is a pressed in sleeve with a hole in it that lines up with the grease fitting hole and either the sleeve was pressed in wrong so the holes did not line up or it had not been greased in so long that the sleeve spun and misaligned the holes. I wound up drilling a new hole through the sleeve cleaned out the metal shavings, made sure there was no lip on the hole, screwed the nipple in and greased it right up.

Ohh interesting! That very well could be what's going on. Thanks for the advice
