I just bought a '79 Gehl 4500 and am changing some fluids (as well as head gasket). I drained the chaincase oil and got about 5 gallons out on one side, it was milky so I am not sure how much water was in it. The manual says it takes 1 gallon of 10w40 on each side, is that right? Just guessing, that seems pretty low, that may get to the chain/sprocket but not a lot higher. Just looking to verify.
Thanks,

I do believe this is correct information
It's just enough fluid for the chain to drag through on the bottom, but the oil will transfer to all of the sprockets when it's moving. If the chaincase is not sealed well, dirt and water can get in from the outside, and contaminate the fluid, or worse. The bearings for the axles should have grease fittings going to them, so they don't need any of the chaincase oil either.

If you have excessive oil in the chaincase, after only putting in 1 gallon, you have a leak somewhere. Either the fluid is leaking from the drive motor into the gearcase, or water is getting in through one of the covers, or through the axle hubs

Hope this helps!
