recently purchased, ether to start. 10 hrs run time. execcisve oil consumption. smokin bad, had him haul it here. pulled head. no visible blown gasket. suspect broke ring, but measured bores, prior to going any farther. max 3.154 make the spec to be 3.125 /3.126. he paid 3500. buy the he boght not me , i did get runnining and gave him the nod to go ahead, wasnt smokin then, after 10 it started,, smokin now here lies the dilema, i only know do it once do it right, but buy the time i get head done , new liners etc, hes upside down, (genral condition sucks) loder arms cracked etc (stat strong) pump strong) MY QUESTION , prior to pullining pistons, can i get away with slapping a set o rings in it and having head checked and done or am i pissining in the wind. havining very little perkins expeirance, i throw myself at the mercy of the court. liners etc will exceed value of unit. thanks dudes input wellcome.( take note its hard to be on the other side of the coin) i would have to tell cust suck it up it is what it is, this is whats its goining to take to square it away, not used to patching ,

I'm with you on that. Why do a half assed job when you may need to do it right later. But i have been known to do this with great success before. I got a D722 engine going from bits that my dad picked up. Cost me nothing, but i was lucky to have enough donor parts.
The bores do sound a little too worn, a new set of rings would help, but if it is already that worn you really should put liners in. But you do that, you should put new pistons in with the rings. You do that and you really should do the bearings or at least check that they are within spec. Then the pump and injectors. Where do you stop?
If it is just a home machine, i'd like to think if money was an issue. If you can get liners installed at a good price, i'd lean towards doing that with new rings.

Smallie, I know how you would advise others in this situation but I'm glad you are asking for other opinions. I do think you should follow your own principles which I have seen you write many times "i only know do it once do it right" and even though you say "but buy the time i get head done , new liners etc, hes upside down, (genral condition sucks) loder arms cracked etc (stat strong) pump strong)" I vote that you should fix it and fix it right.

And to answer your question:"MY QUESTION , prior to pullining pistons, can i get away with slapping a set o rings in it and having head checked and done or am i pissining in the wind." the answer is no. Like you alway say, "do it once and do it right".

"havining very little perkins expeirance" doesn't matter in your case because you have such a huge experience level it doesn't matter as long as you are willing.

Since you are throwing yourself on the mercy of the court, the ruling is: fix it once and fix it right. Replace the liners (even though you say it will exceed the value of unit)/replace the rings and cheerfully put in whatever labor is needed to fix your daughters husbands machine especially since you agreed that it was woth buying. Think about all the things you'll able to teach SIL. I wish you could teach me the things he'll see.

.I understand that its hard to be on the other side of the coin but I'm telling you like you would tell your customers"suck it up, it is what it is, this is whats its going to take to square it away, not used to patching". HTH

BTW how's the motorcycle coming?
