In doing general maintenance on my LS185.b, I was daydreaming.... checked the engine oil, was a little low and accidentally opened the head gasket cover fill cap, put in my funnell and dumped in about a quart of 15W-40 before I realized that is not the engine oil fill. What shall I do?

I think you did not go wrong. This is just another place to fill oil. These engines are used in many machines and therefore have 2 points for oil supply. Just check the oil stick- if the level has risen- all is ok

Thank You! Learning more every day about engines, even if it is the simple stuff.

Yep, sounds like you mean you poured it through a cap on the valve cover. If so, it went right down the drainback holes in the cylinder head into the oil pan same as if you'd poured it in the correct oil fill.

As others have stated , Don't panic, all should be well. For some engines, that is the only oil fill port location. Be concerned if the oil does not show up on the dipstick, or if it remains "deep" when you look in the valve cover opening.
