HELP!!!. I was using my skid steer today and the engine started to run away-heavy white smoke. I put my hand over the intake and got it to shut down. I looked at the dipstick and the crankcase is overfull. I changed the timing belt and pulley about a year ago and have had no problems with it up to now. Any advise would by appreciated.

Ok not use to that now we have to figure out how the fuel got in there
I tried to turn engine over, but acts like it's hydro locked. I only hit the key until the engine quit turning. My last oil sample was clean-no metal no fuel. I use Mobil1 5W40 full synthetic.

Ok pull the glow plugs......spark plugs or injectors and turn it over to get it clear do not start......is this diesl or gas?

Ok pull the injectors or glow plugs and clear it out I will poke around and see whatI can find or someone will chime in that knows
I will pull an oil sample and should have the results by Monday. The engine has a turbo, but because the crankcase is overfull, I don't think it is a turbo seal. The heavy white smoke as it ran away reminds me of when it first starts cold.

Ok take a look at the air filter

This is the same engine that early 873/863 bobcats used before they switched to Kubota.
I'd have given the oil a sniff to see if i could smell diesel.
These Deutz engines are known to have injector pumps to leak, the fuel naturally leaks into the crank case and the oil level rises. I assume this engine has 4 injector pumps on the side of the engine? The other issue is finding what one is leaking. It may also be the lift pump if it's mounted to the crank case.
You did very well to get the engine to shut down. Not everyone is quick enough to think about blocking the air inlet. If it's allowed to run away for too long, the engines can be destroyed.

Everyone told me that it was probably the lift pump. It is a diaphragm pump with venting to the crank. We removed and cut the filter-lots of carbon, but no metal. I drained 6 gallons of oil/fuel from the engine and oil filter. I figure it was about 3-4 gal overfull. I replaced the lift pump, engine oil and filter. I barred over the engine-no sticking. Got the engine started today-lots of white smoke-25 degrees and ran it for about an hour. Luckily, no knocks or noises. I will run it for a few hours then remove and cut the filter to check for any metal. I will keep an eye on the oil level to ensure no more fuel intermix. Thanks for the help.

Glad it seems ok.
Keep an eye on the oil, even give it an early oil change to get any remaining fuel out of the oil system.
