Hello All!

I will be buying my first compact track loader (i still call it skid steer). Probably will buy a new Cat 259D3, here's my situation

I work at Cat and get a heck of a discount, so a no brainer getting a new Cat. But before I understood this, I was looking around at mostly used kubota and priced new ones out of curiosity.

Per kubota website the new 75-3 prices out at like 75k. If i price a 259d3 on cat web site, it's right at 86k.

Is the normal, is Cat typically that much higher or are folks getting a competitive price from a dealer? I'll get a little better price and I know Cat gets a premium, but was surprised it's that much.

Is the Cat 259 that much of a better machine?

Operate each one for a fair comparison. Both will get the job done. The CAT will hold higher resale value and if you work for CAT or a CAT dealer, you should be able to buy an extended warranty at a deep discount. You should be able to purchase your parts at a discount too. Just a thought. Best of luck.

I’ve talked to several equipment mechanics and they have all pretty much told me that CAT or Bobcat machines seem to be the best and most durable. They also hold there resale value. But you pay the higher price up front.

I'm at CAT employee as well and have been wondering the same thing. Did you end up purchasing a new cat machine?

I've yet to see the benefit of a Cat machine in durability terms. This is coming from a guy who has been around since Cats very first skid steers. For the premium you pay up front the troubles seem to follow just like any other machine. I will say, the Cats have had WAY more issues compared to our Bobcats of the same size. The Bobcats have been virtually trouble free machines and have been used way harder than the Cats. We had the 2 speed go out on a 279 with under 1000 hrs a couple yrs ago. That was $9000 to fix at the dealer!! Had an engine blow on a 277 after 4 years of use. That machine was bought new. That's not to mention all of the little things along the way like sensors. Changing the oil on our 279 requires removing the battery because they stuffed the filter in an impossible spot to access. It's stupid stuff like this that makes me wonder why they didnt simplify things more like Bobcat has sone. One thing Cat did right was get rid of that old style undercarriage on their earlier track machines.

My contractor bought a new Cat skid steer. It went out the door with a starter that was known to fail. It failed at my house. It took over a week to get the starter swapped out. He also has a Cat excavator, new last year. Cat has been multiple times to try and fix the AC. Still not up to spec. I can say his 30 year old Cat lull is reliable.

I work at a dealer and I can assure the price difference is based on quality of product Stay with Caterpillar trust me
