Case 1830 Uniloader Cluster Sprocket Lateral Play

Greetings All I have a Case 1830 that I bought new during the Great Blizzard of '79. At 1100 hours and over 40 years it has been amazingly reliable. Last week I was giving it a little exercise when it felt like one of the chains on the left side briefly skipped a tooth or or was binding. Turns out the chains needed adjustment. But the problem is when checking the chains I found I could move the center cluster sprocket laterally about 3/8" or so. Checked the right side and that sprocket has no play. Pulled the shaft inspection cover and the bearing appears to be properly adjusted; no movement of the shaft. What would cause the sprocket to have lateral play? Since the Case is not often used and only for light work, can I get by with just a chain adjustment? Thanks for any advice.

I'd like to get the play removed, that is far too much in my thinking.
Sadly i have never worked on one, so i can't say what to check to make the play the same as the other side.

When I had my 1830, I kept having a chain jump off. I finally found the sprockets where held in position on the shaft with a allen head set screw. Tightened it down with some blue thread lock and all was good. Although, I heard it did it to the next owner after I sold it and he had to do it again. hope this helps

It was a big help; thank you! Got the cover off the chaincase and rotated the sprocket until I found the very small set screw. It was loose and all the way at the top of the threads. Surprised it hadn't fallen into the chain case. Centralized the sprocket, tighten the screw, and it was good to go. Many thanks for the valuable reply.
