My 773G started overheating about the same time the air filter warning light came on so I blew out the outer filter and, since the inner filter is so fine, I washed and dried it in order to get running again. The warning light went out, the overheating stopped, and I've since run it several hours without any problems. The tag on the inner filter says "Do Not Clean". Is there a good reason not to wash the inner filter?

The filters are much cheaper than a engin
Antfarmer is right, couple hundred spent on filters and oil and grease will save thousands in repairs. If the filter says do not clean they must have proven that the filtering ability is not as good after cleaning. Those engines gulp tremendous amounts of air and even a little dust as a steady diet will ruin them.

It is OK to clean an outer filter on a dual filter set up. Never clean the inner filter or a filter when it is only a single set up. When cleaning a filter, the dirt particles cause tiny holes in the filter. Every cleaning results in a filter that can not trap as small of dirt as before. On a dual set this is OK since the inner filter still catches all of this. As to clean or not to clean is up to the individual. Either way, the inner should be replace once it does not look like new.

I also thought the inner was a very thin layer and easily damaged if you tried to blow it out with air. They are only a couple of bucks, so i just replace them when needed.
I do blow and tap out the outer filter from time to time, i have never washed one... Never knew you could actually.

The outer filter is a common pleated type but the inner filter is a solid foam about 1/8" thick with perforated metal on both sides.
