I picked up a 763 and have a few things I need to do to it to clean it up. First I will start with it cranks and runs but when you go to shut it off you have to go to the back and open it up and flip the rod by the solenoid on the back to get it to turn off. Is this the solenoid or is it something else like the ignition switch and how do I know which one it is?

I think what I would do is use a 12 volt test light and test the wires going to the run /kill solinoid to see if the voltage goes away when the ignition is turned off , if you don't have a test light handy and easier test would be to just unplug the wire connector at the solinoid , if the engine dies then voltage is still applied to the solinoid , if it doesn't then as Tazza says it maybe the solinoid is sticking or maybe someone didn't replace the spring oon the shaft of the plunger --------------your problem is backwards of the norm , it maybe getting feed back from the alternator

If you are getting power there with the key off, then try unhooking the alternator, then see if it works normally.
I replaced the factory Mondo alt with a Delco on a 853 and had the back feed problem and engine would not stop. Had to put a diode in wire that power up the alternator when turning th key on. The delco at in a common swap as they are cheaper and bolt right on, so you may want to check if yours has a delco on it now.
