The oil pressure light comes on once the engine warms up. It will go out if I give it more throttle, but as it gets hotter the light wants to stay on more and more. My machine has 5500 hours on it. Is this simply a case of bearings wearing? Any other (simpler!) possibilities I could look at before doing a major overhaul? Thanks!

You can verify that the oil pressure is truly low by installing a oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit. Something like this. http://www.jcwhitney.com/mechanical-oil-pressure-gauge-2/p2009606.jcwx Your local auto parts store should have something. 5500 hours is getting up there but it doesn't hurt to verify as it could just be a bad sending unit.
When did you last change your oil? the other thing you can do if the pressure is low due to wear is to use heavier weight oil. If it still starts and runs well, i'd go the heavier weight oil route.
I am assuming you're talking about the engine oil pressure here, not hydraulic charge pressure
Thanks guys, I appreciate the quick replies and good advice. (Just joined this forum and guess I didn't set it up right cause I didn't know there were replies until I signed in today.) I've solved the problem by putting in a quart of Lucas Oil Additive. Haven't worked the machine hard since then but the oil pressure light has not come on at all. I don't know how long this will solve the problem -- does this stuff break down after a while? But so far, so good.
In time i'm sure it will start to break down, but if you keep an eye on the light, you should know when its time to change it again.
Installing a pressure gauge may not be a bad idea, then you know where your pressure is at.
