Hey guys.. I can across a project. mid 80's bobcat 642. The guy blew a hole in the ford 1.6 block The guy found a replacement engine out of a sweeper, that he heard run. but hasnt put it in. He says he bought new stater/alt/ etc.. for the motor he also decided while the machine is apart he would paint it. so he took more apart to paint and never put it back together. The machine has been sitting for 2 years and he lost interest. He says everything it there, just not put together. not sure how many hrs on the machine but it looks in rather good shape. I worked him down to $2400. is this a good idea or a bad idea? Thanks

If you have a little mechanical skills, it sounds like a good deal. They are pretty simple beasts, but you need some know how and gear to do the job. The hardest part will be working out what goes where as you didn't take it off.

I have plenty of mechanical skill, just never worked on a bobcat. Guess a good manual would be a good start. Whats the best place to get a manual? Will a machine that has the motor removed still roll fairly easily? just thinking about how i can load it on my trailer

A manual is a must.
If you look up the member OldMachinist, in his profile is his e-mail adress. If you ask really nicely, he should be able to line up a manual for you. Give him your serial number and forum name.
Even without an engine, it won't easily roll. If the system is full of oil, it will be locked up. I use brute force and drag dead machines.

Is that a Ford Gas or Diesel in it.

Its the Ford gas 1.6l i was going to try to winch it up my trailer...but i may need a bigger winch. maybe just getting a tow service with a flatbed is a better idea.
Anybody have a 642 and could snap a few pics of the engine compartment? Sure would help alot trying to put this thing back together. Thanks

Sounds like you already managed to get it home, But when I bought mine with no engine to get it on the trailer I pushed the levers forward and it allowed it to roll, because the pump could turn with no engine. I dont know if this is good for them or not, and only pulled mine on and off the trailer like this. I would take pics but I mine is a 642b and doesn't have the original motor. Good luck to you and your project!
